Chinese new years, ppl (usually children and single ppl) get red envelopes containing money. I got 25 cents. 🙂

I had none, a bit too old for that. I did give my nephew and niece some money but not in hundreds or thousands like others had in another thread ***explain to me about lee si***

I am not Chinese but I think the tradition is the red color will bring you good luck. That's why the bride wears red on her wedding day. Chinese folks feel free to correct me if I am wrong.

 
I received a hamster that had been placed into the envelope and then susequently stepped upon.

That was a lie, I didn't get anything, and I'm not Chinese.
 
so when you ask in mandarin/cantonese it translates exactly to "how much red envelope did you receive?"

is "red envelope" synonymous with "money" in this case?
