How much ram should i have?

since you are usin win98, too much RAM wouldn't help you. i would say 128MB should be very enough. if you really run some very memory intensive program like photoshop, having 192MB or so might help a bit, but definitely not that dramatic.

if i were you, i would just stay with 128MB.

Only a bit of a difference between 128 and 192 in photoshop? Only a bit of a difference yes, because 192 is still not enough. 256 would be the minimum for reasonable PS performance, 512 is a good balance, and 768 or 1024 would be optimal.

I felt a difference going from 128 to 256, I think that you should get 256, I do not know the difference was there becuase I went from PC66 to PC133

I went from 96 megs of PC66 to 256 megs of PC133 this month and I can tell a big difference even in Win98/ME.
I would go with 256 if you can.

I have on my computer 384 MB of ram and it is more than enough for me, and I am planning on using it as a server for my other computers to network onto. So if you have a stand alone computer then 384 MB Ram is the most sensible choice, becuase getting 512 is just a waste of money. But all that is just from my experience and my point of view.

I do have 512 Mb Ram.

I do CAD, 3D modeling and photo editing and I often reach my memory limit....

At work I have 256Mb ram and i do use the same software...there is a huge difference.

For example, Mechanical Desktop, Pro/Engineer and 3D studio max3 can take up to 250Mb of ram each and Corel PhotoPain 9 can take up to 300-350 Mb or ram (1200 dpi letter format images in 32 bit color)

BUT, if you dont use such applications, maybe you will notice a small difference in win98 (in Winnt you would notice a much more significant difference)

Good luck
