How much RAM is enough?

Say for the next one or two years just to be able to play most games moderately well.

512 mb or maybe 1 gb?

I have RDRAM by the way, if that makes any difference.

Nowadays 512mb is really the minimum,if you can go 1GB that`ll give you more breathing space for the next few years.Games always run better with more ram & so does Windows, the fact is games are becoming more demanding.

I remember the old days when 4mb was enough 😉.

Well, I'm just looking for something that will hold me for at least a year or two before I make my own PC (I made a big mistake going for this Dell.)

You'll be fine with 512. No point in blowing twice the money on more Rambus when you're looking at a self-build in the future.

I should of been clearer, but if you upgrade within a year 512mb will be ok,however 1GB will benefit if you keep your PC for 2 years or more, best thing to do is go with 512mb and try and hang on until your next upgrade.

Yes, but since it's Rambus he'll have to buy matched pairs of DIMMs, no? May as well start saving up now for the future build.

Thanks all, I was thinking about replacing the motherboard but since its customized and I can't find much info or get support about it I wanted some affirmation that I can run with 512 mb for just a little while (I'd rather have gotten a new barebone with processor if I needed the 1 gig.)

Considering rambus is insanely expensive ($150+ for two sticks of 256) and that you will be upgrading (i would suggest upgrading sooner and selling off your current ram) you should be fine right now. Some games, like bf1942 use an insane amount of ram. Hopefully you arent playing them =)

I had 512 Rdram like you. Adding 2X256mb was a rip-off but 2X128mb wasn't too bad so now I've got 768mb of pc800. That's about right for alot of games like Battlefield Vietnam so I figure I'm fine until next summer.
