How much RAM is enough? (or too much?)

I have a Pentium III 500 system running WIN 98. I am wondering how much RAM would be optimal for me to run. I mainly use the computer to surf the NET and some word processing. BUT I also like to play DIABLO and UNREAL. I have a VOODOO 4500 in the system (32megs). How much RAM should I put in to make this system run the fastest, without wasting $$$ by putting too much into it?! I currently have 196 MB in there. Would another 132 stick hurt or help my performance any?

Another 132 MB stick wouldn't hurt, but the performace difference would be negligible under Windows '98. You would see a better performance improvement under Windows ME or 2000. 🙂

Thanks. My roomate has the WIN upgrade. Maybe I should go for it?! Wasn't sure if it was worth it or not. So the newer OS take advantage of extra RAM? How much is enough or too much for the new OS if heavy gaming is the most I use the system for?

Stay with Win98SE for gaming. I have just installed WinMe on my daughters P3 500E and it crashes/lockup more than Win98SE. However since my daughter is only 3years old and WinME boots alot faster I'm going to stick with it.

They don't make 132mb sticks of RAM, I think you meant 128mb. I currently have 256mb which is good, but I'm moving up to 512mb, my mobo limit, because I got a good price for the extra memory.

geoffkin: You're right at the "sweet spot" RAM-wise for Win98SE, especially given your current usage. On the other hand, with memory prices being so low it would be wise to add at least 128MB more. Forget about WinME (that dog won't hunt) but if you ever upgrade to Win2K or Whistler you'll want the extra RAM.

yah, yah i know...128 megs, I was typing fast! LOL

Thanks for the input Dan. I just have the 'Upgrade WIN 98' CD ROM, is this the WIN 98 SE that you all are talking about? If not, is there a big performance difference between the two?
