How much ram do WinXP really need in order to run them as fast as Win98???

I have an AMD Duron 1Ghz, 256MB of PC-133 and in running WinXP. My glitch is that although WINXP run well, they dont run as fast as Win98, actually sometimes they read too much data from the hard drive. Do i need another 256MB of ram to eliminate such speed problems?

My experience has been that WinXP doesn't become faster than Win2K until you get to the 512MB mark. After that it only gets better. ( unless you have BIOS/Driver issues ) I haven't used Win98 in a couple years, so I can't make an comparison there. Also, once you get above ther 512MB level, there is a pick that lets you disable paging.

My self I'm running WinXP w/ 768mb of ram and it working great. This system boots up in around 30-45sec. maybe. Never got around to use a stop watch to see how long it takes to bootup the system yet. If you want to increase the system proformance some you could 'disable' some of the unneeded 'services' that are running. The URL below can help you in that task if you want to do it. I found that link to be very helpful because I turned off the 'services' that was not needed.

No no i dont have bios/driver issues, or at least nothing of great importance. So i guess that i will have to add another 256MB... By the way, what do you mean by saying "there is a pick that lets you disable paging"...???

XP on my laptop with 256MB of ram runs faster than 2k on the same config...both of which will run much faster than 98 would 🙂

Halfcrazy, you are a LIFE saver. I have disabled some services that i didnt need and i have freed 7MB of ram. And the system already seems to work a bit more smoother. I will continue to tweak the sevices until i can see how much more ram i can free. Thanks a lot.

No problem man glad to help. 🙂 When I come across XP tweaks like that I all ways bookmark them so I can have them for later if needed. I know what you mean I'm still tweaking XP my self which is coming very nicely.
