How much RAM can Windows 98 use?

The better question, is how much can it make use of. After 128 meg windows 98 itself makes little use of any extra ram. Some games and applications can use the extra ram though. I've ran a 98 system with a gig of ram and did not run into the "out of memory error" that could happen with too much ram.

I find the wall to be about 768mb though sometimes higher depending on the system
I have used the MaxPhysPage setting and xmsdsk.exe ram drive to run a system with over a gig of memory with not to great of results.
such as not enough free conventional or upper memory to run command prompt

I think if I could fine a better dos ram drive that would limit the memory before windows loads I could get windows 98 running fine on any system with one hell of a ram drive for games.

I realize now that this is off the topic sort of, but I thought 98 didn't handle ram as efficiently as xp or 2kpro. It keeps apps in memory even after you close them or something? That's what I was referring to.

that problem is due to the vcache settings.
just tweak it yourself and that problem is solved.

(if you dont input a vcache size in Win9x it will eventually use all your ram for vcache .....thats bad, and thats the problem ppl are refering to.)

Too bad it doesn't support HT!! I'd use it in the box I'm putting together. It used to be WAY easier to use than xp.
