How Much RAM Can Win ME Handle?

I want to have a 500 MB RAM disk. I also want 500 MB or so left over for use. My machine won't boot with more than 512 MB RAM however. I have already set MaxFileCache=65536. According to Microsoft Knowledge base I should have no problem up to 1GB RAM. Has anybody successfully installed that much on Win ME? If so I'd like to hear from you. Thanks!!

I was under the impression that it was not possible to go over 512MB with ME.

I physically have 640MB but I use the System Configuration utility to limit the amount of memory that Windows uses to 512Mb as per the "Out of Memory" Error Messages with Large Amounts of RAM Installed (Q253912) in MS Product Support Services.

This available at http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=KB;EN-US;Q253912&ID=KB;EN-US;Q253912

I can boot up with 64MB but some programs (EZ CD Creator) get that "out of memory" error message so I have to dial the RAM back to 512MB.

It would be great if I could get the 640MB working properly.

I had the system.ini file all fixed up like they say. I run a MaxFileCache all the time anyway so this isn't my problem.

What motherboard do you have?

Intel i81x chipsets won't handle more than 512MB of RAM.

Try as I may, I could never get W98SE to boot up cleanly with more than 512 MB RAM installed. This is even with both the VCACHE and/or memory limit tweaks.

The RAM was/is high quality and runs flawlessly under Linux and WXP.
