How much PSU for 2 768 meg GTX 460's and a Q6600@3.6 ?

I have a 700 watt OCZ > 85% efficiency.

Now I know that even the 1010 watt OCZ of the same variety was not enough for a 920@3.6 and 2 470 GTX cards, but these are 460's and a Q6600.

Those GTX460s take 100W extra when overclocked, according to a thread in the video forum. So if they take 140-150W already, then that's 250W each overclocked, so 500W total just for the video cards. I don't know what a Q6600 @ 3.6 takes, but I'm sure it's a lot. So say 200-250W for the CPU alone. That's 700-750 already, and that doesn't account for the system chipset or the HDs or accessories. So I would say an 850W at a bare minimum.

the 460s are at 750 mhz, and I probably won't take them higher.

Think I have a shot ? I don't want to cut it too close.

You should also look at the amps on the 12V rail to see if that's enough for the combination you're listing.

With modestly oc'd 460s and your oc'd CPU, case fans, mobo, chipset, RAM, any USB accessories powered by the system, HDDs, and optical drives, you're probably still under 700w at max load, but I don't think it's a good idea to run anywhere near the max output of a PSU, if only because most PSU fans will get loud, and even if not, it may wear out your PSU or the PSU fan more quickly. Also, aging capacitors will eventually drag down the realistic max wattage of any PSU.

But what if I upgraded that CPU to a I7 950 @ 4 ghz ? would that 850 be enough ?

That would still be fine. If you were to increase the voltage on the GPUs for more OCing I would recommend a 950W+, but the i7 should only be maybe 50W more than Q6600.

Except the 950 is only 85% and the 850 is 90%. Almost defeats the difference. Should I get the HX1000 to be safe ? I have had it with blowing hardware that is not sufficient. But the 1000 is only 80% !!! I don't want to have to get another 1200...(but I do love it)
