How much power would a dead cpu draw?

I got my open box MIVGenez/Gen3 today, wasn't actually open box, was actually a refurb.. Yay newegg, expect a call tomorrow :colbert:

Anyways, because of the ROG connect I get to actually see what my processor is doing, and it seems to be getting power.

I tested it with my HX850, my CX400, and an old crappy OEM one that I probably shouldn't have tested with.

They all reported the same thing, no post, no beeps, 00 on the error LED, and Red Light Special all through the night on the CPU post LEDs.

About a week ago I was playing a game and my PC just shut off, so I booted it up again and dropped my GPUs back to stock. A few minutes later it shut off on me again, so I went into the bios (was running 4.4GHz 1.28v) and put the cpu back to stock. I booted back into windows loaded the game up again and once again it shut down on me (no blue screen, no locks, just a flat shut down).

I've ruled pretty much everything out except the board and cpu at this point, I can't assume the board works considering it's a refurb that came in a beat up white box.

So the question is, would a dead cpu take voltage and get hot, would a dead board give voltage but not post?

I'm leaning towards the motherboard being dead.

Not sure if a dead cpu would take voltage or not.

Higher end motherboards are pretty complicated. I can see a dead board still being able to supply voltages while not being able to boot. Alot of layers, traces, etc that can fail.

I've never had a comp shut off three times, then on the third time never post again... In fact with the old board it didn't even power on. This one at least powers on... lol

Would a cpu just flat out die like that?

That's pretty much how my QX6700 died years ago.

At first I thought it was my mobo, so I RMA'ed my mobo, not once but twice, because I was convinced the mobo was the problem.

Then, after suddenly realizing how stupid I was being and how much tech time at Asus I was unwittingly wasting, I popped my QX6700 into a Gigabyte system that was fully operational (had a Q6600 that I took out) and it wouldn't boot.

Put the Q6600 in my Asus board, booted, swapped the CPU's around again...QX6700 was dead no matter the board I used.

But leading up to its death were some reboots that convinced me the mobo was dying. Then nothing, she was dead.

If you only had a spare cpu to test with it would make things so much easier.

Hopefully the mobo didn't take out the CPU. I had that happen with an open box MSI board from Newegg. Hit power, see bios screen, see flames, hear popping noise, watch computer shut off. Everything on board was dead. :(

EDIT: Balla, did you say you were having issues with your P8P67 Pro before you switched to this board?

P8P67 Pro is starting to be notorious for killing CPUs.

Reboots or flat out shut downs go from playing to power off in .1 seconds...

I hadn't had a single issue for about eight months, then this... lol

Wish I could say I went out in a blaze of glory at 5.3GHz with 1.7v on the dram, but sadly since switching to 3x1080p I've been out gunned in cpu power vs GPU power so for the last month or so it's made no sense to run it at 4.8-5GHz as I had been.

No issues with my board/setup until this, eight months strong.

I think you just found out haw many licks it takes to get to the center of a tootsie pop.

Or at least how much voltage a 2500k can handle for 8 months under water.

Weird it would give up once I down clocked it though.

Overclock moar!!!

I guess I could see if a local shop can test it for me.

Might be a blessing in disguise, RMA, new chip, sell, buy i5-3570k, profit???

I would try to find a friend to borrow a known good cpu from, if not then a local shop would probably help you out for a nominal fee.

With all that power you had going through the massively oc'd gtx 470's I could see it also being PSU-related. I love corsair but my hx 620 has already been RMA'd once. If that ends up being the issue, yellowbeard (here at AT forums) will get you handled ASAP.

I already tested it with my trusty CX400 and same thing happened, while I can't say my PSU is working, it's not the main issue if it is broken :D

It's coming down to either mobo or cpu, I hope Idontcare is wrong - but I wouldn't bet against him lol

The mobo and CPU are around the same price, aren't they? Does it really matter which is broken? Find someone near a MC and get in on the $150 2550k. There's also a $15 off coupon good until tomorrow, some people have been getting 2550k for $135 + tax (and gas to drive there). Check the hot deals forum.

I have a micro center about 20 minutes away from me if you need a 2550k, just send me the link to your cupon's and I'll make the treck for you. Just bought the same board myself (beat white box with goodies in all) and it's working fine so yours should too.

What voltage were you running that 2500k at before down-clocking?
