How much power does a laptop use?

I'd say most laptops are around 100W or so in normal operation. Check out some stats on CPU wattage, video card wattage, and screen wattage.

If we assume 12 cents per KW/hr, note that you could have your laptop on for 10 hours with an electric charge of only 12 cents. So the cost of electricity is minimal.

100W seams very high to me. First of all the 290Lci is Centrino so your power usage is fairly low to start off wtih. I would look on the power adapter it should give you a wattage rating. I got a Dell 600m and that has a 65W power adapter. And I'll bet that 90% of the time is is running in the 25-35W range (maybe lower).

I have seen 80W power bricks so 40-80W is my guess

:cookie;

look at the AC adapter - it'll tell you its output voltage and the amperage. multiply those two together, and you'll get some value, which will be the wattage. this wattage is a little more than the maximum power usage of your laptop at any given time (i.e. with 100% processor usage and hard drive/resource access, etc.)

in all likelihood, though, you'll use much less most of the time, unless you're running distributed computing on that thing, anyways.

Agree with Amorphus. A lot depends on what size display you have. The bigger the screen, the more power used. The biggest power drain is running a DVD movie full screen. Check your A/C adapter - it will tell you what your specific draw is.

It says that it's 65W. Well....I leave my laptop on overnight with the screen closed. It's mostly from downloading...=D

My 1.3 P-M ,15" screen, 5400 RPM HDD, and radeon 9000 is 19V * 3.95A = 75 watts!!! good thing I plugg in at school and suck up all thier power to recharge!!! and not at home HAHAAH!!! j/k hehe

70W brick for my old P3-700 Dell laptop. I estimate with the screen on and dvd drive not actively operating it's about a 40-50w draw.
