How much power does a drive/cdrom take?

This is somewhat unrelated to cases and cooling but here goes.

I am interested in knowing how much I can hook up to, say a standard quality 300W PSU.
How much does a standard harddrive drain from a PSU and how can I find out?

Drives are cheap today but my existing drives are cheaper.
Unfortunately, 5 40GB Ibm drives eat alot of power and I would like to stay on the safe side.
It would be idiotic to loose a filesystem just because the drives werent getting enough power.
