Hello, how much performace gain would I see by going from this -

1.5ghz P4 Willamette
766mb PC133 SDRAM Generic
INTEL DH845V Mobo
Radeon 9800 Pro 128MB at AGP 4x
40GB IDE Western Digital HDD 7,200rpm
300w PSU

to

AMD 3500+ Winchester
1GB Corsair XMS 4400C25 DDRRAM
DFI LANPartyUT NF4 Ultra D
Geforce 6800GT PCI-e 256MB GDDR3
160GB Seagate Barracuda SATA HDD 7200.7
520w OCZ Modstream

What will the difference be in modern games like D3, HL2, and Farcry be?

probably quit a signficant increase as far as gaming goes with the 64-bit procesor paired with a nice videocard.

I'm betting you could probably DOUBLE your benchmarks, easily.

You will easily see a HUGE difference.

Also i would recommend getting a 3200+ winchester instead. It OCs just as far, and is much cheaper. 5% performance difference is not worth $50 or more, especially when it OC just as far.

Should be definitly a noticable improvement, P4 1.5ghz isn't too bad but the SDR ram is killing the system. I think the newer games such as hl2 and d3 need the extra memory bandwidth and bus speed. The nice pci-e video matched with the 3500+, should be sweet.

That is similar to the jump I made (P4 2.2gHz / ATI 9700pro--> AMD64 FX-53 / 6800U) and you will notice a HUGE improvement!

Ah yes this has me more excited!!!!! Thanks. BTW which RAM do you recommend if planning on OC's of about 2.2 to 2.6ghz? I won't be OC'ing right away, so I want some RAM that performs good at stock. I've looked at the OCZ Rev. 2. Anything else not quite as cheap?

A lot of the OCZ rams work well. My OCZ EL Gold Rev2 DDR500 easily gets me to 2.6 and higher. I've heard some people have problems OCing the Crucial Ballistix and Corsair XMS, but they're all nice rams. Make sure you don't get anything generic, and no Valueram. I would definately stay away from Kingston HyperX.

I was gonna say the memory type change alone will give you a huge boost in performance.

Willamette + PC133...my God, man! That was a snail and a POS when it was new!

However, between the two...if you're not sedated, you'll probably fry your brain...and that'll be before you even touch a game. You had the second worst combo possible (Northwood Celeron + i845 would be the worst), so yeah, it'll be a nice jump.

Yeah, you will definatly see a huge differance. I had a williamette 1.8 with SDRAM, and it was more sluggish than the P3 600 system I had at the same time. A64's dont' benifit as much from memory with tight timings with their onboard mem controler, I think a lot of people will recomend just getting value ram.

doesn't seem like your gonna notice much of a difference. You might notice MS Paint run a bit faster.

:p J/P you heard what the guys said... BIG DIFFERENCE !!

Faster RAM would be for faster HT & RAM for overclocking. If no overclocking, or the board can run RAM at different speeds, then basic CAS 2.5 value stuff will be great, and save you some cash.

You don't even need fast RAM to overclock an A64. Link. Get 2x512MB of quality value RAM (Corsair/Crucial/Mushkin) for $140.

Speaking of which, if you're getting a Winchester to overclock anyway, consider the 3000+ or 3200+. You can use the savings on an aftermarket cooler (Zalmans and Thermalrights are good; you choose your own fan if you get a Thermalright, but you can also transplant one into one of the Zalmans) if you find the stock one too loud or not as effective as you'd like it to be (though the stock coolers are actually pretty decent for overclocking).

Are you kidding me? You will notice 0% improvement!! Save your cash and go buy something meaningful. Ok! enough BS, are you telling me you actually played HL2, D3 and Farcry on your 1.5GHz + PC133?

As a final bit of performance advice...
Here there is a firewall and file server, running ClarkConnect. Due to wanting to use content and ad filtering, the P200 wasn't enough.
So, he was faced with a choice.
[*]P200
[*]Decommissioned MicronPC P4 1.6 w/ PC100 RAM, which combined with 5400 RPM HDDs, made for desktops that even grandma might complain about.
[*]PII 350x3, 300x1, slot dummyx1, two dually mobos, one single mobo.
Since the PII CPUs could be used for real desktops, the P4 1.6 got to be the file server and firewall, and when the ad filtering is on, it is slower than an otherwise similar Duron 950 doing the same chore by a significant amount (5-10 seconds for a page like anandtech.com to load, rather than 2-3).

Whether 3000+ or 3500+, go ahead and order it. Once you get it built, you'll want to kick yourself for every minute you hesitated. :D
Very few things multitask slower than a P4 on a 845 chipset.
