Not sure what war is covered in Jarhead, but found this about the Gulf war...gives you an idea:

Some 732 wells were damaged with 650 being set aflame, creating enormous smoke plumes, and 82 being opened, causing huge basins of oil. An estimated 3-4 million barrels of oil per day were burned;
