How much of an upgrade is the 6800GS over 6600GT

I realize the 6800GS is a faster chip with more pipes than the 6600GT, but my question is just how much of an upgrade is that over the card I have now? I'm using the PNY 6600GT AGP.

The 7800GS is probably out due to the lack of punch over the 6800GS to justify spending a hundred dollars more on it. Or does it have a lot more power? I haven't been too impressed by the benchmarks I've seen of it.

I am not doing a motherboard upgrade now so I want one more AGP upgrade to hold me over for awhile while the new stuff from AMD & Intel sorts out.

MY CPU is an Athlon64 3000+ @1.9Ghz with 1GB of PC3200 DDR.

Thanks.

The 6800GS isn't a great upgrade over a 6600GT, but you will definitely notice a difference. Those cards overclock quite nicely too.

EDIT: You could also get some more performance if you OC'ed your CPU a bit more. I'm sure you could get 2.2GHz at least.

Yeah, I just started out with the OC'ing, I plan on ratching it up more and more as it proves it's stability at new speeds.

Plus from what I've read it's easy to unlock the AGP version of the 6800GS to 16 pipes.

Would you fine folks think I'd be better off with the 7800GS?

Looks like from what I'm reading you can unlock the extra pipes on the AGP 6800GS pretty easily. I think that seals it. A 16 pipe 256bit with 256MB card should be a nice upgrade over my 8 pipe 128bit bus card.
