How much of a difference (if any) does a UV filter make in taking outdoors photos?

Heading to the Canadian Rockies come Saturday for a week's vacation, where I plan to take tons of photos. Stopped by the local camera store to pick up some stuff and decided to grab a converter ring and UV filter for my Canon A-series digicam, cost me about $30, agreed it's a token amount but I want to know if it will it make a damn bit of difference?

uv filter is worthless for improving picture quality on digital cameras - digicams dont react to uv light. film on the other hand, does. what will make a difference will be a polarizing filter.

The UV filter is worth it just to protect the lens. The polarizer will reduce reflections due to shiny objects, clouds, fog, water, etc.

Little if anything I think. You'll get slightly improved contrast, some of the dust particles that would otherwise appear will disappear, and you'll protect your built-in lens from wear.

As for lenses and filters of interest, I'm very slowly working on a Big List of recommended add-on lens solutions over at CanonTalk.net. Grab yourself a membership and use the 5 MB of gallery space to post the pictures when you come on back. Have a good trip. 🙂
