How much more would you ask for in this scenario for a job offer in Bay Area?

i simply would not take a job where the commute would be 2-3 hours a day.

my old tech lead got a job with google in mountain view and moved from the east coast to the west coast for it. i'd be surprised if he is taking anything less than $200k.

2-3 hours commute every day and $250/mo for parking. I don't think I'd even be interested. Unless I could make damn good use of that 3 hours per day, 15 hours of my week would feel wasted.

Why would an employer care about the length of your commute? Seems to me they will offer you pay commensurate with the position and talent pool available.

They care if the candidates they want aren't taking positions because of it or if employees are quitting to take jobs in SF (or outside the bay). Which is what's been starting to happen out there.

my old tech lead who works for google said he had like a 45 minute commute. however google has shuttles that he rides in, which have wifi on them, and he can bill those 45 minutes each way as actual workable time. so he's really only at the office for 6.5 hours a day.

that is the only way i'd ever take a job where the commute was an hour or more.

Assuming you currently 40 hours per week with a 2 week vacation, if you charge overtime for your travel time and incorporate your car expenses, the break even point is actually less than $125k. Throw in a 6% raise gets you to just over $130k. Add in the extra taxes and you need about $148k.

Make sure you compare the benefits and possibility for future growth.

I would request 1/3 the price of a new house in a neighborhood 15 minutes drive from work in order to maintain the same quality of life.

Looks like houses go for around 1.1 million and up in the area. I'd ask for 367K.

With 100k current salary in BA you're a great deal for the new company.

Can you get more money from current employer.

A lot of companies in SV have commuter programs. Either they have shuttles from around the Bay, like SF, Salinas, East Bay, etc to campus, offer shuttles from CalTrans and other public transportation to campus, or free public transportation passes. The shuttles even have internet access, so you can consider the commute time part of the work day.

If the new job doesnt have this option, I dont know that its worth it. Might not be too bad if you ride a bike from the station to work. I think they have bike lockers at most of the stations so you dont need to take the bike on the train. And there's the cost of Bart and CalTrans passes. I havent used those services in awhile, but the last time I did those were separate passes.
