How Much More Memory Do I Need?...

Hi, I am running the program VMware and I installed Windows Vista in it and such and I never use more than 4.5GB of my 8GB memory and my computer locked up, could barely move around when in virtualization. Was using 90% - 95% of my memory. Now, I wasn't sure where to post this topic but if anyone is familiar with running an OS within your OS on virtualization, please let me know if I need 12GB, 16GB, 24GB, 32GB of memory to do virtualization and still surf the internet and do some other things without lag.

Thank you very much.

How much did you allocate to the VM? Start it at 2GB and see how vista does. What's your Host OS?

Hey, I gave Vista like 7GB of memory. Was that the problem? I thought I would do that so Vista would run smoothly. If all it needs is 2 or 3 just to run it, maybe thats my fault?

I am using Windows 8. Thanks. : ]

Yes, that was your problem. Depending upon what you are doing in it, Vista is a memory hog. To start out, do like ch33zw1z suggested and only allocate 2GB to Vista in the VM. If you end up needing more to prevent Vista from slowness and/or excessive swapping, try going to 3GB but not more than 4GB. Once you start going above that, you are going to start seeing more impact on your host machine's ability to operate normally.

Okay, tried it and you both were right, thanks a lot! : ]

In the future, I'll get 16GB of memory and not have to worry about it. Thanks again. : ]
