How much money would you save if you quit playing Hold'em?

Started playing $50 a month on Party 3 months ago and lost the first 2 months worth pretty quick on the no limit tables. This month I am sticking to the limit tables and am doing a lot better. I've been going up and down about $25 and am down about $20 rightnow but atleast I haven't busted out yet. Seems like every time I have a good day I have 3 more were I can't catch any good cards and end up back down again.

If you're gambling for fun, entertainment, and to kill time you're wasting both your time and money.

Before you even walk into the casino to gamble, set yourself some ground rules and a goal.

I've learned the hard way and have set up for myself the following guidelines....
- bring in $100 only, if you lose, walk
- never go back to ATM
- if I win $50, walk home with it.

Simple enough? Think you can follow through with it? I've made the mistake of getting too emotional and heated and going back to the ATM before. The second time back usually goes the quickest and you lose the most money. If I have extra money in the pocket, I usually leave it in the car. So that way if I want it I'll have to make a real concious effort to go and get it.

I stuck with that rule for a month and made a decent $1300 profit. Winning $100 each time and walking. Then things got heated and you know the rest of the story....

Now I'm back with lower expectation goal, $50 and I walk. And there's been times when I told myself it's still early I think I'll play a bit of blackjack while I wait for the other game to set up. Big mistake. I lost my pot before I even started the game.

Now I even keep track of all my losses/wins in an excel spreadsheet and make notes as to why I thought I won/lost that day. It's been working so far.

Find a game you're comfortable with. Mine's baccarrat. You're not pressured into playing every hand. I can sit back and relax and watch other people play and make a bet once every so often. With blackjack if you're in and out you'll get the stare of death as people think you're ruining their winning trend as you're messing up the cards.

I never lose because I never play poker online unless it is freeroll tournies, I lost about $50 to start off with, and then realized the entertainment value was higher playing small games with friends at home.
Online gambling i'm up about $2500 using some bonus methods.

Any good resources to learn about the game ? (URLs and books)

I placed second in my first tourney then 10th in the second. At the invitational (Winners only) I placed third. I'm up for the year including Wednesday night games. I have another tourney this Sunday about 60 players. I'll make it to the last table at least.

I love Hold 'em and actually was playing before it was Cool! No really we mixed it into dealers choice about a year before WPT. Wish I could play more but wife won't allow it (I'll be gone all day on Sunday 10am till about midnight. *insert whip sound here*

Any good poker player knows they are never garunteed to be succesful in any given tournament. In the long run there will be more wins than losses, but never is making a final a sure thing.
Luck can beat skill anyday.

Playing poker with fake money is probably the stupidest thing you can do. It's a complete waste of time and teaches you NOTHING about the game, except what hand beats what and you should know that already. If you're gonna play, play for something... even if it's like a $5 or $10 buy-in. Then there's an actual reality behind it.
