I'm 18 and about to move out on my own to college next fall.

TV, 360, headphones/headset, laptop, desktop, server, phone, ipod, and car stereo (yes all paid for by myself), I figure about $3500.

You?

sort of accounting for depreciation

$1500-1000 in computers and computer equipment
$800 TV's
$1000- 800 TV related equipment
$500 in kitchen electronic gadgets

You know what, not as much as I thought I did. The other big step in expenses are motor driven products. After that it's static items like furniture.

most of my items i collect over a small period of time and they come in as like christmas or birthday gifts

Desktop (~$2000 with all peripherals), TV ($1200), iPod ($400), PS3 ($500 w/ games)...so about $4000 I suppose. About to graduate and move out of college.

Do I count the wiring in the walls? Or my toaster? What about my floor fan, car battery and outside flood lights?

I'd consider renter's insurance. After I exceeded 10k in electronics (stereo), I got some renter's insurance. The insurance covers replacement cost for 13k$ and costs 80$ per year (USAA), but the cost depends highly on where your apartment is, and what kind of security/fire/doorman type features your apartment has.

In a thread a while ago I did a sum of my newegg purchases and it was $16000 since 2000. If I add in money I've paid for musical and digital camera equipment, it's probably well over $30000. At least glass holds value much better than a computer. Very sad to think about this really.

Most of my computers are too old to be worth anything (think IDE hard drives, only PCI / agp 4x).

My home theater gear, speakers, reciever, projector, etc have are probably a couple of grand.

Over 9000, give or take.

Computer cost me about 1.5k to build, my main server costed about 2.5k, my backup server was maybe about 1k, I have an old server I use as a test environment more or less, that probably was a good 2k originally as it was my main server. So now we're at 7k, and we're not even considering the network side yet, various electronics around the house, and spare parts. Maybe not quite 9k but most likely close enough.

Now I'm basing this on what it actually costed me, most of what I have would barely sell for 2k by today's standards.

Probably a little less than $1000 if I got fair used prices. Maybe not even that.

renter's insurance is so cheap, there's no real downside to it.

I'd estimate around $5,000... 2 large screen lcd tv's, 2 laptops, netbook, 2 ipods, xbox 360, top of the line desktop, 24" lcd monitor, digital camera..

Is that fair market value or purchase price? My stuff would be worth a lot based on purchase price, but I'm not sure now. My 42" plasma is at least 3 years old, most of my PC components are the same. Macbook is fairly new, as is my 24" monitor.

I won't even count our DVD-VHS deck or 34" tube TV. Haha.
