(family of four , now that i think about it, i have 2 daughters, 5 and 11, as they get into their teen years, i would need more than that to stay "comfortable" as they begin to drain the life force from my wallet)

The lowest I've ever made living on my own was about 9k/year when I was 17, and that was comfortable enough. It always gets me when I hear radio commercials about "low wage jobs placing burdens on people" when in reality, low wage jobs are just a stepping stone to something better if you're willing to work, and nowhere near the burden of not having a job, unless you're one of those folks who feels it better to leech off of the rest of the honest people instead of doing a little honest work themselves.

If I had children I would have to squeeze things a little tighter than I do now, but there are more important things that comfort to somebody with a family.

EDIT: To be comfortable on my own in my area I feel 25-30k would probably suffice if I was tight with it. With a small family, 40-50k would be enough.

I was making about $90K/year in the Bay Area and never seemed to have any money. Became unemployed and got by on $1200 a month. Now almost back to where I was, and I feel rich. Well, comfortable anyways. I can't buy anything I want, but I can eat out or buy stuff without worring if I have money in the bank. However, I'm still afraid to use my check card....always think I'm going to get declined. BTW I'm single, no dependants. $50K in the Bay Area should be fine if you watch your finances, even with a couple of dependants. Probably won't be able to send them to a fancy school or keep up with the Jones, but CSU schools are very affordable.

How much you make is irrelevant without discussing how much you OWE and what your monthly bills are. For example, if my truck and personal loan were paid off, that would free up $850 a month. That's a lot of money.

That number was with unemployment and selling off all the stuff, like cars, electronics, DVD collection, etc. To be honest, I was just happy to have a place to sleep and food for me and the cat, even though the cat got better food than I did (ramen vs purina). I know what you mean...I went into a black hole for a few years.

Why: That covers a really nice house, two functional vehicles, business attire, moderate food expense (we don't eat lobster and steak every night), savings for college and our retirement, and some moderate entertainment and travel expenses. We could live on 50k a year if we tightened up expenses, but it would be fairly tight, meaning to have college, savings, and retirement taken care of, we would have to live in a small house, drive small cars, buy all discount clothing, never eat out, and rarely go to the movies.

It depends on how comfortable I want to be.
The amount of money is really dependent on many things, like how much TIME I would have to spend.

Maybe my definition of comfortable is different that the rest of yours. I interpreted comfortable as having enough savings at any given time to not have to worry about unexpected expenses in the forseeable future. Having a giant house or new cars isn't really necessary to be comfortable for me, but a sturdy place to live and a running vehicle with plenty of money for food is enough for me. I suppose it makes it easier if you are skilled as a mechanic, or in construction, and have good insurance through your employer.
