I say 50k should be enough. Remember, you have to think after taxes, so your 50k salary is going to bring in like 33k, 2.8k a month.

2000 for living expenses (just housing and utilities) if you want your own place. If not, you can probably find a room in someone's house for like 6-800.

You'll need a car, so say 400 bucks towards car payment and insurance. Another 150 or so on food if you don't eat out much. Food can be found cheap, its just housing, that will hit you.

I don't know where you other guys are getting your figures from, but my experience is right in the Westminster, Garden Grove, Santa Ana, Fountain Valley area.

Personally, I would head south towards San Diego to live if you want to be in the area because riverside is hot as hell and well, the commute sucks.

EDIT: OP said live. He certainly isn't going to be buying a house or anything unless he sells his balls to the devil for a huge loan.

well, the thing is, from the specific cities you list, you live around mile square park probably. on the fountain valley side it's ok. on the other sides, not so good.

$100K+ a year...

Seriously though do you want to look like a normal OC dweller with nice car(s) and a huge house? Or do just want an apartment?

so, for cost, it does depend on cities.
if you look into it, south county is the rich area (= expensive), north county is cheaper.
coastal is usually more expensive, just like it is anywhere else. someone else mentioned huntington beach is cheap. well, it's not. some areas are cheaper, though still not as cheap as garden grove/westminster, which are just nearby. and the areas near the cost obviously are way expensive.
orange is a pretty bad area, except villa park is there, and the hills, and anaheim hills, which are nice, obviously. santa ana is bad, and anaheim. so, they should be cheaper. (these are more inland)
irvine is pretty expensive, as everybody says. however, if you look into old irvine, it's actually not super expensive compared to huntington beach/fountain valley. maybe the same or less sometimes.
south county is just expensive, plus traffic really stinks down there. that'd be all the viejo's (aliso viejo, mission viejo), rancho's, and stuff.
and of course newport beach is expensive.
but, if you're looking for a place, try to get a place nearer the coast. the weather's nicer. inland like orange gets pretty hot. huntington beach will be more mild.

I do have trouble believing 900 a month for a single bedroom place....sounds like something would be wrong with the place for it to be that low in costa mesa.

I wanna live here later on, but its too bloody expensive! Even coming out balling 65K with a BS really hurts you if you are interested in investing money, etc...

costa mesa isn't a good area

They live in a one room shack in some crappy part of town...like Garbage Grove.

Oh, and can we stop putting THE in front of OC? It's Orange County...most people who live there say they live in whatever city they happen to live in, like Anaheim, Huntington Beach, Newport Beach, Seal Beach, Garbage Grove, Irvine, etc.

That's why from an economic standpoint, housing prices have to come down or OC will lose it's economic base. My parent house in Fountain Valley is ~$850K but they bought it for 200K about 20 years ago. Could they afford to buy the house now? Barely, the same job doesnt pay 4 times as it did 20 years ago. The high costs force out newer families and young professionals, leaving old folk who will be retiring soon ( essentially useless economically) and people who dont mind living in multifamily dwellings. I see a bit more of the latter going on, a few houses in my old neighborhood have recently sold to Mexicans who are putting 10 people in a house designed for 4.

Of course, it will always be RELATIVELY expensive, but the costs have to be justified by local economics.

you watch too much tv. I lived in LA for most of my life, until I moved to irvine 7 years ago. Orange County is nice, but it's not some glamorous city like it's made to be on the tv shows. There are the nice coastal cities, and the ghettos. Just like how LA got their fair share of upper class neighborhoods.

Hehehe, everyone calls it garbage grove though. At least the people who don't live there anyway. ;)
