How much money did you put into flex this year?

I did the full 2400 this year also. I did 2000 last year and could have used a lot more.

Yeah, I ran out around the end of November. Not bad though...my goal is to have just enough in there so that I don't have to worry about medical expenses. The way I have it set up this year, I would have to spend roughly $12k before I would have to pay out of pocket.

That may sound like a lot, but my son is on the insulin pump. I have about a $4k buffer above what I know I will spend this year.

$500 bucks, and there's $300 or so still available. Have to get contacts or maybe new glasses. This year I'll put in about 1,5k since we are going to have a kid.

Stupid question. What are you guys talking about?

It's for health care.

We have a full HSA, and it doesn't expire, so I can put up to around $5800/year.

Unfortunately with all of my wife's health issues, I put nearly that much in and it's empty 🙁

I have an HSA so it makes an FSA obsolete.

I have an HSA that is funded by work. After that runs out, I have a $1500 deductible before insurance kicks in at 90%. My flex money covers my deductible plus $9k worth of expenses.

I decided against new contacts until my vision insurance will pay again.

I'm sure flex spending works but I just have a hard time giving putting my money into an account like this and then having to ask for it back when I have an expense, not to mention having to use it all up or losing it.

I have a debit card tied to my flex account. It works great and there are no forms unless a purchase is disputed. The game is to only contribute as much as you know you will spend. If I have any leftover this year I want to get some nice glasses.

I put in about $400, and the company matched $400.

That said, my insurance has a $1,500 deductible, so I'd take a pretty big hit if I got sick. Hell... an ER visit alone is about $3,000 nowadays.

I am married with 2 kids so each year I have been putting in $3k and it is usually gone by July. This year they upped it to a Max of $5k so I am putting in $5k. I will see how long it lasts me this year. All the friggin paperwork does piss me off. I hate dealing with Aetna .

we put in 600 this year. still have about 400 left over from last year that i have until feb 28th to spend according to our extended fsa plan. For any of you with extra money or spending on OTC stuff, take a look at buying them online at drugstore.com. if you run through bing cashback search aspirin/advil, you can get 20% cashback on top of the fsa tax savings and 5% in drugstore.com dollars for later spending.

Interesting. I mean do you run up your health expenses typically? I'm 23 so I suppose I don't really have much to run up. I spent $0 last year (yes I went in for the typical physical and I did my routine dental cleaning). I finally realized this past month I can spend my HSA money on things like contacts. I'm due for a ~$400 renewal plan in the next month so I'll spend my HSA money there. Probably another $200 for some new glasses in the summer to replace my lost Oakleys 2 years ago now that I can get glasses again.

FSA is great if you know you got stuff that you will be spending on soon, but for me at this age it is unlikely I'll be touching an FSA for some time.

I do like the Debit card thing though. It is mighty convenient. I have it for my HSA. Now if only I can dig it up....

Edit: Did your HSA plan get worse this year? Mine certainly did.

Gonna have to do more than just contacts to blow that amount of money

Op mentioned son is on insulin pump. first thing I thought was like WOW... expensive contacts. I have corrective contact lenses and at like $300 a pair that is ridiculous already. My plan is about $400-$500 a year, so $2400 made me really wonder if I could upgrade to the new Lexus Lens or something 😀
