How much money could a Certified Optometrist who works at Pearle Vision make per year?

I get my eyes checked annually from this guy and each year we chat. He owns a Lexus, airplane, and travels the world. The guy only examines eyes and writes prescriptions. How much could he possibly make?

Are Pearle Vision Centers franchised or corporate owned. Maybe he owns the Pearle he works at(?).

Minus office lease, insurance, and payment on his loans (to purchase all those equipments), his take home is still in the 6-figures.

With that healthy cash-flow (people annually get their eyes checked) and paying all his loans in time, he would probably gets a high credit rating. So, it'd be easy for him to get a loan (even with low interest rate) to buy a Lexus or other big-ticket items. You didn't specify the airplane, but you can get a used single-engine airplane under $100K.

Depends on whether they are working for someone or they have their own private practice. If they have their own business, then it will vary depending on how much business they get in. But if you are just working for someone, your annual salary could be anywhere between $70K - $90K. My sister is an optometrist, she pulled in about $85K fresh out of optometry school and after passing her board exam in CA.

That a good beginning salary. Do they have to be certified as rigorously as doctors?

They do need to be certified to practice, but I doubt it's as rigorous as medical doctors. Considering most optometrists are certain to be $125K+ in debt before they even start working, I would say they deserve a good starting salary.

Many patients aren't paying $60 for an eye exam. I have vision coverage through my job, and they cover 100% of exam costs. The optometrist agrees to take the insurance money as payment in full. Only trouble is, the insurance pays $35, so that's all he gets. And the last time I got an exam, they had six appointments that day. Unless they get a lot of walk-ins, it's not a full day of exams. That was at a LensCrafters in a big city mall.

I find it hard to believe an optometrist is netting much over 6 figures unless it's in a high cost of living area (NY, NJ, CA).

If he works at Lens Crafter, then there is a possibility that he get a cut with the glasses sells.

Professional school of optometry, 4 years I believe. Most require an accredited 4-year degree for entry into the program. Not as rigorous getting in as medical school, but you can't be an idiot either. Program differs from medical school in that they focus a lot on studying optics, so having a strong background in physics is a good thing.

65-100K starting depending on location with no ownership. I looked into this quite heavily after finishing my BS but it was too expensive and too long to see a return. Plus I'm bad with people so they got me in a test lab in the basement of or building:p

Hey if you want money get an MBA from a real school like wharton. My bro pays more in taxes than me and my wife make combined.
chicago MBA..

It takes eight years of college to check eyes and write eyeglass prescriptions? I'm not trying to belittle optometry but it isn't surgery (literally).

yeesh. you want them to go to school for a year just so they can write prescriptions???

they do look at your eyes and i bet you'd be pretty pissed if your optometrist missed something in your last eye exam. it's NOT just looking at eyes. they check the health of your eye, questions you have with your vision, etc.

i would think people would hold their eyes and the people that are TRAINED to look at them in a little higher regard.

An optometrist's main and usually only function is to take your prescription and prescribe it to you. An opthalmologist is the one who checks for disease and things like that in your eye. They are very different people and my guess would be that 9 out of 10 of the guys in places like Pearle Vision are Optometrists.
