Profile your usage and record your peak usage, tack on a bit more than that and you should be fine.

Some software uses PF even when you have excessive amounts of free RAM available.

Yep it's not recommended to turn it off no matter how much RAM you have. Some games/programs will still write things to it and might not run correctly if it's off. Never turn it off. If you have so much RAM you won't be using it much anyways.

But making sure you have enough memory to not use the PF extensively doesn't immedially mean turning it off completely.
