So wait, say for a Math course there are 3 hours of lecture a week and 1 hour of tutorial, is that 3 credit hours or 4?

And what about a chemistry course, where there are 3 hours a week in lecture, 1 in tutorial, and 4 hours in a lab setting?

Normally that would count for 3 credits of math and 3 of chemistry.

you're all leet and i 'spect that.

49 out of 104 voters majored in engineering. That might explain something.

I took 4 years as a Mechanical Engineer and then my fifth I transferred to Information Science when I got over what other people thought of what I would be doing for work and instead went for what I would actually want to do. It was an easy transfer, for some reason every class carried over ;). If I didn't take all of the Engineering math there is no way I'd have anything close.

Thanks for all the responses!

If you were almost done with the mechanical engineering degree why didn't you just finish it?

I knew I'd never want to do anything with it if I got it. I wanted to be an inventor, not designing some valve on the toilet for the space shuttle for 5 years :). Engineering was more a dream for me than a realistic job that I'd enjoy for the rest of my life.

Don't recall exactly - enough to get an engineering degree & math minor. I think the requirement for a math minor was 25 credits. Then a bit more in grad school. I voted 28-30 but it could be more.

Freshman year was 5 credit hour calc for both semesters.
Next year was two DE classes and linear algebra
Other ones that stand out - two numerical methods classes, complex analysis.

The one class I actually never had, but have needed more then most others (except numerical methods & linear algebra) is statistics.

Calc 1, Calc 2, Calc 3, Linear Algebra, Vector Calculus, Differential Equations, Mathematical modeling, Abstract Mathmatics, Algebraic Theory, Number Theory, Complex Variables, Probability and Statistics, and a senior seminar course...

Yeah, I'm a math major...

I took 3 credits of Sociological Statistics...that's as close as I got to math. I took enough in HS and tested out of all the intro college courses.

A class is 3, maybe 4 hours around here. Where do you go to school? I only took calculus 1 differential/integral calculus.
I'm a geography major, and I should have taken statistics... but I guess I learned enough from a field methods class.
Its not funny if I have to explain it.

Calc I, Calc II thanks to AP exam...
Calc III, Diff EQ's, advanced diff eq's, statistics, engineering statistics, and maybe 1 other math class at college #1, all while majoring in engineering.

THEN, at college #2, I majored in math. :)
Oddly, they weren't satisfied that I met the requirement for Calc II and made me take it again. (I was the person sitting by myself with a blank notebook in the front row.) - I was the go-to guy when no one in the class could answer the prof's questions.
Then, my diff eq-s didn't mesh with their diff eq's (and, after taking the course, it was a completely different beast; I agree) so I had to take diff EQ's again. Then, lots more math classes. :)

Lots of math classes...

Calc 1,2,3
Intro to DEs, Intro to Combinatorics, Intro to Rings
Lin Alg 1,2
probability, stats
Number Theory, Chaos and Fractals, Groups, Rings
coding theory, applied crypto, game theory, graph theory, linear opt, network flow theory

and I think that's it.. unless you count quantum info processing...

yeah, i am just finishing my double degree C&O and CS

Most of my math courses did not have the subheading MATH xxx due to being an engineering major. The 100% pure MATH xxx classes were:

PreCalc (AP) 3 credits
Calc I & II 8 credits
Diff EQ 3 credits

Other courses that can be argued as primarily math:
Probability, Stat, and Reliability - 3 credits
Discrete Structures - 3 credits
Linear Systems - 3 credits
Electromagnetics - 3 credits
Discrete Event Simulation - 3 credits [stats course in disguise]
Engineering Systems Modeling (Grad) - 3 credits [stats course]
Algorithms and Data structures (Grad) - 3 credits [proofs course]

Some people might even argue University Physics I & II (8 credits) because thats where you really master your Calc skills, but I didn't count it. So I voted in the 31-35 range.

Got a Master of Engineering in Computer Engineering, have a minor in Electrical Engineering and Modeling & Simulation.

Don't forget math is integrated into all of our main courses as well such as circuit theory I & II, algorithms, digital logic, microelectronics, etc. etc.

Int algebra, college algebra, trig, precalc, calc 1-2-3, math for elementary teachers, finite math, & stats so far (30 semester credits worth). There are still 5 or 6 classes (at least) I plan on taking when I have the time. I'm not any kind of science major (yet). Will have a BA History and MA Education.
