Depends entirely on you and what you use your vid card for. Ti4400 is still a powerful card without AA or AF.

Depends how low you're willing to go with frame rate and image quality. Probably not a whole lot longer though.

upgrade video cards every other generation after the gen of the your video card. That means you're due for an upgrade this year- of this generation.

:) All cards are going to be outdated faster then we think ! ... the industry is moving along too fast!!! a videocard from 4 years ago would last u 2 years now your lucky to get 8 months out of it.

I think it depends on the type of gamer you are and the meaning of the word "last" to you.
If you're a hardcore demanding gamer then you'll definately need a new gpu of the next generation.
Sometimes if you ask my opinion it's better to ask yourself if what you see in your screen satisfies you.
Maybe you'll loose some new features from a newer card, but if performance is satisfactory to you, then I wouldn't recommend you to change it yet. Ti 4400 was and still is a great card.
I myself upgraded from a gf2gts to 9800pro and I saw a vast amount of improvement in performance and a variety of new features, making me very happy with my purchase.
Sometimes if you change too often, you don't see noticeable differences and you throw away useful money that can be absorbed in other hardw/softw issues.

No, your standards are just growing faster :).
Lucky to get 8 months? You're crazy.
GF4 Ti 4200. Mine died. It is still a decent card, and will take D3 and HL2 to finally make an upgrade necessary. That's 2+ years!

Quake to early Quake2: S3 ViRGE 3D decellerator
Quake2...with an uprage from my Cyrix PR200+, late '98: Voodoo2 ($209)
'00: GF2 ($132)
'02: GF4 ($170)
'04: Radeon 9x00 ($168) (I'd have to have gotten a 9600, 9700 or 9800 when HL2 came out, even if my card didn't die)
Hhhmmm...I see a pattern. A major generation every other year, minor generation between, upgrade on major generations, get 2 years out of it. This 9600 might be the first that will only last me a year, but only time will tell for that.

You crazy, 9700 Pro is 10fps slower than the 9800 XT in many games with AA/AF turned off. This is a 2 year old card. Could easily last for another 2 years. What a great buy, whoever bought it in the beginning.

that got the 2.2ns ram?

Well, before I posted the link, I went to the BFG site and it shows core/mem at 400/950 and I didn't see anything about BFG offering an SE version. Of course, they may just not be displaying it on their site. But even so, at 2.8ns mem it would still be a very decent card for 185.00.
But seeing that memory rating makes me think its the 2.2 mem.

P.S. anyone know what the heck Tabb is talking about? You can see his extremely vaigue post a couple up from here.

It all depends what games you currently play and wish to play. For someone Intel Extreme Graphics will be enough until they die in 2050. If you want to play Call of Duty 1600x1200 4AA/8AF it's already not enough as we speak.

For ~200 i'd probably get Radeon 9700Pro, it has better AA performance than any of the nvidia cards at the moment at the price but ati can have driver problems and some compatibility issues. then again for around $184 Geforce FX5900se is a great option.

Remember, since HL2 and Doom 3 will not arrive until March/April whatever the date may be, by then a new generation of cards will have come out helping to decrease the price on all the current fast cards which you can then acquire for cheap and play those new games. Remember the misconception is most ppl buy the fastest card to play current games at 200FSP and then the new generation games they cant play because the card beocmes too slow. Well you might as well get a medium card that plays the current games at 50FPS and then a medium card again that plays a new generation at 50 and so on. Besides the FPS are bounded by the refresh rate of the monitor. So this could prove to be a viable option -- upgrading as required to be able to play smoothly, not upgrading for bragging right of the highest frame rade/3dmark score. Think about it...

I just went from a geforce2 ultra to a ATI 9500 PRO (retail.) And I haven't noticed much difference in my old games. With the new directx 8.1 and up games, I noticed a HUGE difference. Makes my peepee get erect when I see the mad textures in the new games.

My friend down the street got a 9600xt. We've been swapping our cards to see which one is better. We both have willamette pentium 4s. Only I have RDRAM and he has DDR. When I put his card in my computer, I get like 200 more 3dmarks. But when you put my 9500 in his computer, his gets 300 more than the 9600xt... I don't get it....

I'm guessing that you should not upgrade from a 4400 to a 9600xt, or anything in the $200.00 range. Simply because, I think that 4400 is tough enough to get similar frames to the new stuff. If I had a 4400, the only way I would upgrade, is if I had enough cash to get the UBER R33T cards. Like $400.00 and up. 9800xts, 5950.... Stuff like that.

Good luck man, you should listen to the guys on this board. They are pretty dang smart...

The "real" answer totally depends on the games you play and the rig it is installed in.

I have been using a GEFORCE 2 GO 32DDR for the last 2.5 years, and am able to play every game with the exception of 2 - Prince of Persia: SOD and Deus Ex 2.

Apart from that, I have been able to play every release so far at 5 -10 fps, medium details :)

Of course, this ain't my formal gaming rig, but said this just to prove a point :)

I'll second that, I moved my Ti4400 on to another machine and stuck a 9600XT in it's place..... now I don't know all the technical stuff, but I saw zero difference! In fact the 9600XT seems to be a bit slower. The Ti4400 was 10% OC'd (cant remember the numbers) and the XT is at 573.75 core, and 333 (666) mem.
Stick with the 4400 for a little while longer.

I'm using an overclocked AGP8X version of the GF4 Ti 4400 and it still plays all the current games well enough for me. Right now I'm enjoying Star Wars: KotOR with it. I'll upgrade to the next generation of GPU when the NV40/R420 have been released. I should be able to get a sweet GF FX 5900 Ultra at a bargain price at that time. :)

Edit to add: Hold on to that 4400 for just a little while, you'll get a lot more for your money if you do.

You should hold on to your video card until you have software that doesn't run acceptably. The longer you wait, the cheaper the hardware will get. The definition of "acceptably" is subjective. If I can play @ 1024x768 without AA/AF I'm cool with it. I'm hoping my ti4200 will make it until November (I paid $99, and will have had it for two years. Fifty bucks a year is reasonable).
