How much longer will 1GB last?

I was just wondering as I remember not too long ago that everyone thought 2GB wasn't worth the money and wouldn't be for quite a while. What do you guys think?

As long as you want it to. My old rig (just got rid of it a week ago) was running on 256MB, didn't slow me down.

But if you mean as far as games, I'd say mid to late 06. :)

As far as games, if the next games are like BF2, then early 06.. Either way, if you're building a new gaming rig with a respectable budget, you want 2GB.

I'd go with this but naturally depends on what you use it for. If you game or do heavy graphics work I would say start looking now - the need is near. If you don't need the latest games then stick with what you have.

I have a Newcastle and 2X512's so I'm "RAM Locked" at the moment. I can't add to the remaining slots and I'm not about to ditch a perfectly good 3800 just to add more memory.

You can still add ram, you just take a performance hit cause you have a newcastle core. Unless your mobo only has two slots.

If you are referring to my post then yep. I'm not likely to settle for a performance hit. I'll go with what I have until I need to move up again or until RAM prices hit the floor. I'm not betting on either one happening very soon though.

I think 1GB still has a lot of life left to it - 512MB is still sufficient for most stuff nowadays. Or at least I hope 1GB doesn't become obsolete anytime soon...

512mb systems are standard as of 2K5. However, higher end is GB right now. 2 GB is for like computer users who really need it.

Very soon, 1 GB will be standard. A system with 256mb is a shame.

the only amount of ram thats out of date is 128mb. my brothers laptop had that, and by the time you open 1 browser window its already at 135mb. you cant do anything on it without rediculous amounts of paging.

It all depends on what you're using a computer for. Someone that just browses the internet won't need as much RAM as someone who plays BF2.

Do you think it would be smart to sell my 1GB performance and get 2GB of value RAM while my 1GB is still worth something. I could do it now with a 50 dollar loss, tops.

Again... only if you play games like BF2 or do heavy graphic design

I think sometime in the first half of next year for people who seriously use computers. I just upgraded yesterday from 1GB to 2GB on my home machine. While there was maybe some small performance boosts that I barely notice, the only big ones so far are switching out of games (alt-tab) and exiting to Windows after playing game. I?ve also noticed Firefox is more responsive after doing nothing in the taskbar for hours. At my work (Software Development) I know I could use 2GB of RAM now. However, for people like mom, it will be several years before she needs 2GB since 512MB is more then enough for now.

So my prediction is by next June the recommendation, around here (Anandtech), will be 2GB.

Using WinXP on a machine with less than 512MB isn't worth vomit.

For big 3D games, 1GB will work fine for another year. Check the link in my sig. I play BF2 very well, thank you, at medium vid settings, viewing distance 100%, 4x AA. The game plays perfectly in single player mode, indicating net code problems are the biggest obstacle.

If EA keeps pumping out poorly coded games like BF2, we'll need 4 GB in no time.

Also, it looks like Vista is gonna be sucking up ~300 MB itself, so we'll need 2 GB just to be able to play games smoothly.
