Mwave mentions they'll get some stuff in at the end of the year... any word on other outlets? I'm thinking of a wireless LAN for x-mas... :)

The Airport is 802.11b, not 802.11a.

I think the question is how long of a wait before 802.11a is considered mainstream enough for consumer usage and consumer pricing? I'd say Q3'02 or even as late as Q1'03. considering how long it took for 802.11b to become cheap enough for the average computer Joe.

some SMC linkage...

"SMC's 802.11a wireless networking solutions offer tranmission speeds of up to 54Mbps in standard mode and 72Mbps in "Turbo Mode". Utilizing the 5Ghz frequency range with 8 non-overlapping channels means seamless coexistance with Bluetooth, microwave, cordless phones, and currently installed 802.11b wireless networking solutions."

Mwave.com has a few 802.11a items listed but not in stock with a price only slightly higher than 802.11b Of course this could change when they have the stuff in stock, but who knows...

SMC EZ CONNECT WIRELESS 11MBPS ACCESS POINT W/PC CARD Detail Specs $310.33
-----
SMC EZ CONNECT WIRELESS 802.11A ACCESS POINT (NO STOCK - Estimate arrival on 12/13/01) $350.16
SMC EZ CONNECT WIRELESS 802.11A CARDBUS ADAPTER (NO STOCK - Estimate arrival on 12/13/01) $142.77

And to nate....

802.11a is not compatable with 802.11b stuff though (they can coexist because B uses 2.4 ghz and A uses 5 ghz).

the IEEE just ratified the 802.11g standard which is backwards compatable with b and also goes at 54 mbps.

Hmmm.. so will we be seeing 802.11g as the successor rather than a mass market of 802.11a stuff? Being compatible with A & B would make it a more attractive offer pending pricing isn't a big issue...

In a Cisco conference call seminar, they stated that they were not going to develop 802.11a, and were shooting right to 802.11g.

I understand why given the distance limitations of 802.11a.
