I have a 1996 integra and till now i have been changing the oil every 3k miles and never had a problem. For thel ast 7 months or so i have been putting some crazy miles on my car. Because of my Job i have been putting about 3-4k miles a month on my car and decided to get my oil changed every 2 monhts instead of 3k miles. Today i was driving to work and saw that the oil light was on.. I think it's been about 5 or 6k since i got my last oil change. I have to drive around 150 miles tonight to get to my destination. Is it safe to take the car there tonight with the oil light on and worry about this situation tomorrow?? or should i go out of my way to get an oil change today.. Thanks for all your help!

I think the light means low oil pressure. Check your oil level lately? You're supposed to do that every 500-600 miles.

Don't drive any further than you need to. The oil light is on because you have very extreme low amounts of oil. Did you even check to see how much you have? I would not drive 5-6k miles on an oil change, asking for trouble there. Get it changed ASAP. I wouldn't even mess around with just adding oil.

How much oil is in there?

You do check it, right?

You never drive with the oil light on. Find out why the light is on. You will begin to damage the engine immediately if the oil pressure is low, and it will all be over within a few miles. Low pressure is the usual reason the light comes on, unless there's a malfunction, but that's not extremely common. The most common reason for low pressure is a low oil level.

Some cars like my friend's parents' Suburban, has an oil light that goes on at a certain mileage, and there's a button somewhere like the glove compartment to turn reset it.

Since that means you have low oil pressure and low oil pressure is bad check your levels. If your levels are fine the light could be faulty or the oil pump bad or something like that, but eitherway check your level and if you see it's low just top it off and you'll get the 150 miles as long as the light goes off again, which it should.

As mentioned below it's very possible that 150 miles on a car with an oil light could do some nasty crap to the engine.

That's called a maintenance interval indicator. The Suburban also has an oil pressure light. They're not the same thing.

foolanger, what oil light are you talking about? The mean red one with the picture of the oil can on it, or an oil change interval light?

The big mean red light shouldn?t have a picture of an oil can on it, it should say ?$3,000!? Then maybe more people would realize that it?s serious business, and stop driving immediately.

I like that idea! I wonder if I can do that to my girlfriend's car, just in case....

Are you trying to pull a Kramer? He did his on gas, but oil, come on. Just throw a quart or two in it to get the light off otherwise you could be in big trouble.

Do you mean the old light that warns of low oil pressure, or the change oil notification?
If it's the low oil pressure one, listen to these guys. If it's the change oil one well better let them know so they can tell you what to do.

Go double check your owners manual. Maybe I've just led a sheltered life but I've never seen a car that shows you when the oil is low, just lights for getting it changed or low oil pressure. If its low oil pressure, no matter what the cause, if it has low pressure you can do severe damage to the car by driving it with the light on.

As to where its going, its either leaking (look under it after its been parked for a while) or its burning it.

Are you trying to destroy this guy's car? The oil light means low oil pressure, not low oil. Low pressure can have many causes, only one of which is low oil.

Low oil pressure can be caused by your oil level being so low that the oil pump suction tube is occasionally sucking air. Hence, low oil pressure.

Increased oil consumption means a leak, either external or one internally. I would suggest you start with a visual inspection by a qualified mechanic.
It may be a leaky valve cover gasket (external) or a bad Piston ring or Valve seal(internal).
These are not things you could just look at and "see" unless you knew what to look for.
Does your car drip oil? That is the first question.
Get a mechanic to check it out.

Which is why I said-"Low pressure can have many causes, only one of which is low oil."
