Face it, obesity is a national problem that affects my health benefits.

How long before we tax the "bad for you" food?

How about we force smokers to pay extra? Or those who consume alcohol to pay more? What about those who have eating disorders?

You cannot single out 1 group of people in todays society without getting into discrimination lawsuits, etc.

How about we don't nationalize the health care system so you're not paying for everyone else, and let the fatasses pay their higher, 'high risk' insurance premiums.

but its already happened.

I hope we do tax the crap out of people who can't control their cravings for "bad for you" food. Better benefits for me! I don't wanna pay for their health problems and nasty habit.

In Cali we used to have a snack tax on Twinkies, Candy Bars, Chips and the like. Helped raise revenue for sumin back in the 80's IIRC.

Didn't last long!

i know smokers pay extra for life insurance. i'll bet they pay extra for health insurance. it isn't discrimination when obese people and smokers are a much higher cost and the actuarial data backs it up. i mean, to use your logic, a 16 year old male driver with a camaro should pay the same car insurance premium as a 40 year old married man with an accord.

edit: yup, just looked at ehealthinsurance, and smokers pay $11 more per month for the cheapest plan at my age. i bet it's way more if someone were 55.

Why? They die early of a massive corniary and never take advantage of medicaid or much insurance all at. It's the heath nuts who should pay more living into thier 90s sucking the system dry along the way.

Smokers pay a smoker's tax, drinkers give the state government money hand over fist. As a fat guy, I have no issues with a fat tax.

Not everyone who eats "bad for you" foods suffers negative health effects.

Not everyone who is fat eats "bad for you" foods, but suffers some other health problem (like unusually slow metabolism for example).

How about we stop socializing health care, and then we would stop worrying so much (and in so selfish a way) about our neighbor's health, eh?

i'd consider myself to be a pretty empathetic and open-minded person, but if a certain segment of the population makes more than their "share" of claims, i think it's only right that their premiums be higher. we already do this for smokers. we do the same thing for young drivers and car insurance. it's just smart math, and it's smart buisness for the insurance companies because A) less risk for them on high-risk individuals, and B) encourages high-risk individuals to alter their behavior to become low-risk individuals (which of course benefits the individual as well).

and yeah, fat people should pay for two airline seats as well. you use the space, you pay for it.

I feel for those who have problems beyond their control who are overweight, but c'mon. I know some people are incredibly fat. Lazy fat, the kind of fat you can only obtain by sitting on your ass all day long doing absolutely nothing and eating like it was the person's last meal ever.

Health insurance is so damn expensive because we've got to pay for the operations that keep these people alive. Bypass surgery isn't innexpensive, and while it isn't just limited to fat people, it definitely contributes.

I truly think what needs to be done is encouragement to be healthy. Tax breaks for those who can prove they exercise regularily or belong to a fitness club or gym. you can be healthy as a horse and still die, but if you take care of your body and keep it fit, then only good things can become of that.

Point being, take care of yourself. Quit being irresponsible and do something about the weight. America is fat because everybody is so damn lazy. Ride a bike or run every now and then, you'd be amazed at how much it can help (I used to be 6'2 220lbs and today I'm 189lbs... sure says something doesn't it) You just have to cut back on eating and do a little exercise.

Anyways, end rant. No self control = crappy burden placed upon others.
