Lookin' to unclutter the media stuff.

Kinda' likin' those combo VHS/DVD recorders.

That way you can play tapes, play dvd's, record dvd's, straight-thru record from the digicam, etc. etc.

Just that a combo unit like that is (for example) $179 at Costco for their Lite On unit.

Or........get around $100 for *just* a dvd recorder.

My decision as to whether to keep one extra piece of equipment (VCR) vs incorporating & tossing, would be based on how much longer I think VHS will be around.

I'm really surpised at how quickly VHS is dying out. I don't think our local BlockBusters have any tapes, and I think maybe even Walmart has quit selling them.

I think they're only alive because people still want to watch old family movies or tape their favorite shows with one. I doubt very many of them are actually using it to watch a hollywood type movie with.

Before we got TiVo (last year) my wife used our VCR all the time to tape shows if there were two shows she wanted to see at the same time.

And to clarify..........

This is *strictly* about taping TV shows.

(Kinda' Tivo vs. VHS, except I'm only talking about practical use for those of us who don't have Tivo yet)

I would NEVER go rent a VHS tape at a video store. I basically just have a couple tapes layin' around for taping sporting events, late-night TV shows, etc.

Unless you store your tapes in a magnetically shielded container, most tapes will become unreadable by common VCRs in 27.2 years. ;)

As far as a format for new releases its already dead, but I'm sure it will be around for awhile. Hell I still play 8 track tapes from time to time:)

I haven't had a VCR in nearly 5 years. I've had a DVD player for about 8 years so it took me about 3 years to totally switch.

I think VHS and the floppy will die at the same time, and the world will rejoice :D I thought as soon as 1+ gig thumb drives came out for $20 or so that floppys would die, but they just wont :(

We have nearly every Disney movie ever on tape. Plus I have the original widescreen star wars trilogy (not the edited crap) on tape. Also have probably several dozen fairly recent movies on VHS (5th Element, a couple of the newer Star Treks etc). I'll be damned if I'm going to spend several hundred dollars replacing all those. Maybe I'll upgrade those in a couple format cycles when the tapes are unwatchable.

Yes, but if you were buying something *today* to eliminate clutter among your a/v equipment.........would you still not get a combo unit "just in case"???

Or would you just buy a DVD recorder only??

Or not even that??

Helican Scan Recording is a fascinating technology still. I don't know it's probably a geekish thing with me.

Even more rare these days are CED carts. Anyone remember those?

I sure as crap hope the VHS doesn't die soon. How am I going to tape my favorite TV shows without it?
