How much it costs to leave your computer on..

I thought I once remember reading that a computer doesn't waste that much electricity..and tried telling my dad that, but after doing a simple calculation here we found that it's really damn expensive from what I originally thought.

Computer uses say..500 watts, PC + monitor. Is that a valid estimate?

Electric company charges $0.20 Kw/hr, I think that's about right.

That would work out to $0.10 an hour..leave it on for 4 hours day that's $0.40 a day..*30 days $12 a month just for computer use. 8 hours a day equals $24/month..and 24 hours a day is $72 a month! That's like twice your DSL bill.

$0.20 per kwh? Holy crap where do you live? I'm only paying 6.5 cents for the first 1000kwh and 5.5 cents thereafter..

And that actually should come out to $73/month.
