How much is this monitor worth...........

Hello. How much should I bid up to on this monitor:

New Black IBM P76 17" Trinitron Monitor
- .24mm aperture grille
- 1600x1200/75Hz
- anti-glare screen
- high contrast CRT

The guy selling it says that he bought it for his brother, but his brother decided he wanted to go 19 inch. He bought it factory recertified by IBM (in other words a previous customer refused shipment & so the monitor was returned without opening the box). The monitor has not been used at all. Shipping is $25. The lowest I've found it new for is $415. Also, the guy selling it doesn't have any ratings (new seller). Opinions welcome!

Thanks,

Hmm...I don't know anything about IBM monitors, but don't expect to do 1600x1200 on a 17". Everything will be quite small and hard to read. $415 is quite high for a 17" today. I'm currently shopping around, and found a "professional" NEC FP955 19" .24mm for $435. This is a recertified/refurb monitor so I personally wouldn't pay more than $150 for it. 19" are starting in the mid $200's these days.

I'm betting that the tube is the same FD Trinitron Tube on the Dell P780 (which I run 2 of off my GF2 MX Twinview). Basically rebadged Sony's. VERY sweet monitors. However, i'm positive you can find it cheaper than that. Coyote is right about running it at 1600x1200. Even if it can do that res, it'd be waaaay too small. 1280x1024 is plenty big enough with out having to squint to read everything.

There was a guy in the FS/T that was selling P780's. He started out with 18 or so of them and was down to 2 left. Thing is, he was selling locally only. But definitely look around before dropping that kind of cheese on a 17".

you can get the 19" g400 from mwave for $415 totaly new. shockigly the g200 is still about 330 at the cheapist places new. so if its unused and has a full warnety $300 is fair.

I would not suggest anyone spend too much money to purchase a product from a new seller. That is a big red flag for you. I would not spend $300 on any 17" monitor. I'd opt for a larger 19" once I got in that price range. If you check you can get your own refurbished 17"/19" for a decent price from a manufacturer. That is more reliable than someone you don't know and can't find. You better do some of your own specs work to see if this is a must have monitor for you or if you'd be just as happy with another screen. Unless you've seen it in person you really don't know what it looks like. For comparison I've using a NEC FE950 and it cost $330 +tax. Suggest you visit some stores to look at $200-300 17"-19" monitors. You might just be happy with the picture quality of "low end tubes."

Anyway, my first instinct is not to buy that IBM you're thinking about.
