How much is SSD worth?

Hi all,

I am thinking of buying a SSD to use as the c drive(win 7). I see a lot of deals on newegg and other places, almost daily, for SSDs from different manufactures. I think i will need a 60gb drive(hope that's enough), and the prices range from about $80-$130. I think the more expensive ones are 'Sandforce', and/or have very high stated read/write rates(275/250 Mbps!!), while the cheaper ones are 100Mbps or similar. I guess my question is what to look for when buying an SSD? Will my computer be able to take advantage of those speeds, and so its worth paying for? I will not be playing any games, maximum heavy activity, i think, will be editing AVCHD video from camcorder.

Thanks!

Sandforce drives aren't at the upper end of the price range. There's an Agility 2 60GB for $115 ($90 AR).

About those sustained read/write rates... don't use that as a measure of an SSD's performance. The most important aspect of an SSD is its random read and write, which is not a listed spec. You absolutely have to look for reviews.

Whether an SSD is worth paying for... that's not an easy question to answer. I've never bought a single HDD worth $100 before, so the ~$100 SSD seemed rather expensive, but I'm quite happy with what I got from it.

OP, 60GB is plenty for the OS and core applications. A $90 AR Sandforce is a really good deal, and a perfect way to jump onto the SSD bandwagon.

Hi guys,

thanks for the answers. I was about to buy the Agility 2 in newegg, but thankfully checked the rebate details, and found that its only valid for purchase made between 1/18-1/19 (two day sale!). So even though newegg still says its $89.99 after rebate, the rebate form say 1/19. Anyone planning to buy this must be careful.

thanks

Still, even $115 is tempting me. I am gonna get RAM and an upgrade to CS5 first though.
