After reading the MTB tires thread earlier today, I went to see how much slicks would cost for mine.. then I realized I might be better off getting a really good road bike instead. Anyone know where I can find price information, etc. on used bikes? MIne's a 1999 or 1998 KHS Comp FXT full suspension bike with very few miles, no off-road miles, etc.

Here's a pic

There is no precise way to answer your question - the value is what the market will bear. Typically FS bikes do not hold their value as well as hardtails, and the KHS brand is not as well-known as the larger players, which will not help. If the frame is similar to the current design, that will help somewhat. Figure, as a ballpark figure, that the bike should depreciate by 30-50% off its original price if it is in good condition. You may be better off finding someone to trade you a road bike for it, as road bikes have relatively poorer resale than MTBs in today's market.

What was the original MSRP on the bike? Bikes are pretty much like cars: they depriciate in a reverse exponential curve (rapidly at first and eventually levelling off) unless you're talking about something particularly rare/collectible.

You might want to dig around on MTBR.com to get and idea of what your bike or similar bikes are going for. By similar, I mean same frame material, full-suspension and with the same component grouppo.

What's your projected price range for road bikes?

bah, forget the road bike!

get a BMX or a lowrider :p

seriously though, I havent been in the MTB scene for a while, so I'm not too sure what its worth. never heard of KHS either :-/

I think brutuskend owns/runs/has something to do with a bike shop, maybe send him a PM. (my damn memory failure is at it again;)).

Try to get 50% of the original sticker price for it - assuming it is in pristine condition.

It's in great condition sans a few scuffs and scratches from normal use.. retail was $1299.. The guy at REI that I asked about it said I'd be justified in asking around $800 for it.
It's not the same frame style as the current bikes, it looks like a hardtail but with FS. (i.e. none of that funky suspension-under-the-seat floating triangle wierdness)

As far as road bikes go - or I guess I should say city bikes - I was looking at the Cannondale Bad Boy or the REI Novara Big Buzz (disc brakes! :D)

I'd say $800 is completely reasonable based on the age of the bike and its condition. Maybe give yourself $50 either way for negotiation purposes.

While your bike may be worth $800, I highly doubt you'd have luck finding someone willing to fork over that much for a 3yo mtb. As said before, it depends on market conditions. My guess is you'd be lucky to get $400 for it. However, if your components are XT/XTR and you have a good wheelset right now, you might be able to get more.

You could buy a set of slick MTB Tires for $50+/- and mount them on your existing wheels. Or you could buy a whole new wheelset to make changing them over easier. Wheesets jump in price quick, and make sure you factor in getting them true'd and tensioned.

I happen to have two wheelsets and would say that a MTB with narrower / slick tires is not equal to a Roadbike. It's just a MTB that has less resistance on the road. If you plan to race and/or ride with Roadies, then you are going to want a roadbike.

TIP: There are some bike shops that sell on consignment, that might help you get a little more and save some hassles... bring it in and give them your bottom line price and see if they'll sell it for you. If you come back a month later and it's still for sale, the price is too high. :p

Nope...400 is way to low for that bike, especially if it's lightly used. I'd say 700 at the least.

Could you give us a rundown of what components are on it? I see a quadra fork and what looks to be pre-V-brake XT brakes. What about the rest?

Shimano SXT-RC brakes
Weinmann BCX2 wheels
WTB Primal Raptor 1.95 tires
Avid SD 2.0 brake levers

Am I missing anything else?

STX-RC brakes? Parts seem decent, but I wouldn't figure on getting more than $500 for that bike.

Your problem isn't the quality of your bike; it's the market of other bikes.

There's a 2000 Jamis Dakar Comp for $700 - no offense to your bike, but it isn't in the same market as that bike, especially with some of your older parts.

Yup, I think dman and Entity are correct...I humbly rescind my earlier estimate.

Ask $600 or $650 for it and see what happens. Remember a bike shop will low-ball the hell out of you because they really don't like to deal with trade-ins (used to work at a shop). They really just do it to get you into a new bike.

Looks like the bike is a mite big for you, huh (based on the saddle height)?

I think you will be hard pressed to get more than $500 for the bike, unfortunately. The undamped fork and cantilever brakes will hurt you, as will the generally low-end components. That said, you never know until you try, and there are plenty of willing buyers for all kinds of things on the Internet, so who knows?

3-4 year old FS bike, somewhat average components, $1299 retail, looks above average condition = $500 max. The Quadra fork will depress the price because any buyer will want to replace that pogo stick.
