I was thinking of selling my 5yr old pc and wanna know how much is it worth ?
Zotac Nvidia Geforce 9800GT 1GB, Intel Core 2 duo E7500, Asus PSQPL-AM, Dynet 2GB And Simmtronics 2GB DDR2 Ram, Umax nPower 450W PSU and Western Digital 40GB PATA HDD

I think you got all possible answers.

You might be able to get 100-300USD out of it, but it depends a lot on where you're located and what the currency is. I know computers like those will usually sell for around 150-250€ here in Portugal, although that HDD is scrap. If you can find (or by) an old 250GB+ HDD to put in there, it will severely improve the value of the computer if you sell it to someone who's not computer knowledgeable. And by "severely improve", I mean you'll be able to sell it for more than 50USD, because that 40GB is junk. Seriously. I suggest you don't even include it in the build when you sell it.

But again, it really depends on your situation. A similarly powered computer will cost new around 350USD-400USD or something, so you need to take that into account. Of course you'll need to custom build it, but well... Just saying.

Having tried this myself on craigslist recently I can say that your PC is worth very little. The main problem is the HD, it's essentially unusable. However, a lot of people look on CL to buy PCs they subsequently fix up a bit and resell. I wouldn't be looking for much more than a hundred bucks. That could be a challenge, too.

You can look on newegg, they sell refurbished PCs, really not bad ones for the ~$150 range, to get an idea on price, but people on CL are scum and won't pay much for anything.

I don't think you should pay your own money to upgrade this pre-sell. Let somebody else do it.

Why not donate that pc and use it as tax deduction.

When I donate Stuff 70% of the time I am given a blank receipt that I can put in the value myshelf.

WTF? last time I asked how much my rig is worth my thread was closed saying no asking for value of stuff or some such nonsense.

Why not donate that pc and use it as tax deduction.

When I donate Stuff 70% of the time I am given a blank receipt that I can put in the value myshelf.

Where do you donate at? I have never been given a blank receipt in all the years I donated tech stuff. However what's to keep someone from puttting down 1 million dollars if it's blank?

Yea, is that a typo or are you sure op, that the hdd is 40 gb? That just does not seem possible.

Nope that's not a typo ... Actually with this built i got a 1tb hd which i thought would be best to stick to it ... And this 40gb one is 7,8 yrs old ... It was just lying there with the junk !!!
