How much should insurance be for an item that went for $230 on eBay? The seller charged me $4, this seems high.

Who are they using for shipping, UPS, USPS, ? You can look it up on the shipping site. Doesn't sound that high, maybe rounded up but in the ballpark.

I don't know. He has only sent me an invoice which I already paid. No info on shipping.

Isn't it the first $100 for ups is covered only for free? You sure do need insurance when shipping with them.

First $100 is covered free. 35 cents for every $100 on top of that.

Grrr, sounds like I got ripped off. Where can I calculate insurance on the UPS site? I couldn't find it.

A lot of sellers use third party insurance too, much easier to deal with than USPS insurance claims.

If he shipped it from a place like Mail Boxes, Etc. it might have cost more.

Did it say in the auction that it would cost $4 to insure it?

No. This is what it said in the auction page: Shipping Insurance:Required may be more than $1.30 depending on final bid All sales final.

Here is the invoice however:

Price: $228.76

Shipping and Handling:
$6.50

Shipping Insurance (required):
$4.20

Other discount (-) and charges (+):
(seller discounts, insurance, tax, etc.)
$0.00

Total :
$239.46

If your seller is using usps, you did not get ripped off
Insurance for the first $100 is $2.20 and extra $1 per each $100
so for $230, your seller has to pay $4.20 exactly.

wow really?

My USPS charges 1.30 for first $100 then another $1 or so per next hundred. Unless they changed the rates recently.....hmm...i better double check

For items over a certain price, I always use carrier such as FedEx or UPS. With included insurance, its worth a little more, plus if something happens, it's easier to go through the claims process (from personal experience).
