i have to tutor 2 people this summer...one in calculus II and III and the other in college algebra. ive done tutoring before, but it was always through a school program with a predetermined amount of money per hour.

ive never tutored college classes like these, though, so i dont know how much is fair. im not a greedy bastard like most people here probably are, so i was thinking $20/hr. is that about right? if it is way too much or way too little, you can criticize me all you want as long as you give me some helpful information somewhere in your cut-downs :D

20 is exactly what I was going to suggest. I paid 25-30 for HS teachers to help me out with math.

It depends on the circumstances. On the lower range is the young kid who just finished the class, and wants to be a tutor. Sure he/she knows the material that is necessary. However, detailed questions and explanations which go beyond the class might come up and often cannot be answered. I often see these tutors going for $15 an hour, $10 an hour for their friends.

On the upper range are educated, skilled people who have experience in teaching, tutoring, and have knowledge that goes well beyond the class in question. My sister is one of those and charges $50 an hour to upscale Chicago clients.

You sound like you are in the middle. So $20-$25 should be just about right. Of course, if you do a little basic micro-economics reading, you should be able to use your math skills to find the optimum price to maximize profits in your situation...

I worked in a school sponsored tutoring center, free to students, paid me $8/hr. I kinda wish I had done some on the side as well, would've charged more, but also would've been fired from the tutoring center for it :)

$20/hr is more than fair for it. If they're a problem though and give you shit, tell them that your time is worth more than $20/hr and as long as they don't take it seriously it's going to be $30/hr.
