Don't post about the 7200 rpm disks that are faster etc. etc. I know it, I have them in my primary box.
This is for my cousin's computer (duron 700 + gigabyte kt266a + 256 ddr) and he isn't rich so he has gathered every penny to get new hdd...so is buying ata100 5400 rpm disk worth the money?

I would say it's definitely worth it. even though i doubt the real transfer speed would be somewhere around 65-80 but that's much faster than ata33 which would be around 20-31. Go for ata100 and get a good one.

Even the very latest 5400rpm drives aren't going to transfer data fast enough to swamp an ATA33 bus, much less an ATA100 bus -- so on these drives "ATA100" is little more than a marketing gimmick.

However, the newer 5400rpm drive will almost certainly be quite a bit faster than the old one -- it's just that the difference won't be enough to require an ATA100 bus.
