How much is an appropriate amount to offer for this job?

I bought a sofa and loveseat from someone off craigslist, and I need to hire someone with a truck to help me move it exactly 4 miles (mapquested at 6 minutes). They wouldn't need to load it, my friends can do that... just drive.

How much should I offer to pay someone for the job?

Lots of people in LA looking for work... when I was moving all my stuff from storage (Culver City to West LA), I put up an ad offering $30 for help with moving all the boxes (had about 20)... I received almost 50 replies (including a few from people who claimed to have an Escalade and a Lexus SUV... sorry, but if you're driving those vehicles, why answer an ad for someone who needs help moving for $30??), and a nice guy named Jim helped me out. Took 2 trips and almost 3 hours... he helped drive and move all the heavy boxes upstairs. I ended up giving him $40 cash and an IKEA table I didn't need anymore.

Mileage = $0.77/mile... from the UHaul place, that'll probably be about $10 or so. So $10 + $19 + $15 (insurance) = $44 total... I think I could save a few bucks by hiring someone privately, plus I wouldn't have to worry about being responsible for the moving vehicle.

Why don't you rent A UHaul for the day and do it yourself? In my area the one that is more than big enough for a sofa and love seat is $20 a day, and you won't need to worry about rain.

EDIT: I see your point in saving the money, however I have always found that being responsible for myself equals better results than hiring "some dude with a truck" And I actually am a big dude in a truck.

So you need to hire a truck for an in-town move. The driver won't need to load the stuff on the truck. Will he/she need to help unload it, or will friends do that as well?

If you are just looking for a moving truck, consider getting a 10' Uhaul or Ryder truck. They have relatively cheap in-town rates.

Otherwise, figure that the work will take a total of an hour of their time (total, including travel to and from the locations) and think about how much you would pay per hour to hire a truck to help you move for the day. My starting point would be $30. Any more than that and it becomes cheaper to hire the Uhaul.

There was a guy on Seattle craigslist who offered his pickup truck services in trade for beer, ganja, and "massages". Look in the barter section.

Hi Bistromath... I would, but I did that when I first moved all my stuff into storage, and it ended up being $40+ (purchased $15 insurance :( ). Oh, and it doesn't rain too much in LA. :) (I think it is now, though...)

Hey Ryan... all they'd have to do is drive, I can have some friends help with the loading/unloading. So basically, all I'd need them for is ~30 minutes of their time (24 waiting, 6 of it driving). Not too bad. I was thinking $20 as minendo suggested, anything lower might be perceived as insulting?

I refuse to whore myself out for moving services. :p And, the fiance probably wouldn't appreciate that too much.

Yes... and no... Moving from a single for $700 to a room in a 2bed/2bath for $475.

Having roomies again's gonna be weird.
