Hello,

I just bought a 2001 Pontiac Aztec. Of course its used with 40K miles on it, I bought it from a big GM Dealer in my area. Its pretty cool and the only thing really wrong with it is, it has a few (13 or so) small *minor* scratchs. Now even though they are minor, I still really want to get them fixed ASAP. I was talking to a family member and he said that any body shop would be able to take care of them w/o a problem but then (cause he's an idiot) says "well, at least I think thats what they can do, i'm not sure". So I am also looking to maybe re paint it but then again this same moron says "you will pay over $2,000 for a paint job". Now this family member is a complete idiot, his idea of painting a car is going to home depot and buying a few spray paint cans and makes his car look worse after then it was before and is some how, happy that his 1998 Blazer looks worse then a rusted out 1980 station wagon.

So.... As i said, it is a Pontiac Aztec. If i was to go to Maaco or the GM dealer where I got this car from, how much money would we be talking about if I wanted it to be re painted. I don't mean a "value" paint job, I mean a paint job that will last a few years before it begins to show signs of chiping. I don't think it would be that much as I mean, the aztec is 30% glass, 30% Plastic/Rubber and 40% metal, so its not like painting a mustang or minivan from top to bottom. What do you think?

EDIT: Besides the obvious reason for buying the Aztec (Needed a car), The dealer was having a weekend sale which was any down payment over $2,500 the dealer would match it. So even though I was approved for a loan of $22,000 for a SUV (not counting the fact that I had 5,000 case on me. The asking price for the aztec was $17,995. I gave them $5,000 cash and they matched it with another $5,000. So i only owe $7,995.

a decent paint job will cost you $25000, minimum. a GOOD paint job can easily run past $5000.

Yup those numbers are about right. I heard some horror stories about Maaco... don't skimp on the paint job. It will look really bad. Why can't you just have the one section painted and matched to the other color of the car?

I did some research and saw that the GM dealer where I bought the car from has a body and paint shop. So i probably could just have them touch up each small scratch but I am just looking for all alternatives. I don't know how much each scratch to cover up will cost vs just getting the whote thing repainted. any clue on how much covering scratch's cost?

an Aztec?....I'm sure Pontiac has other cars. A really good paint job is gonna run you about $1k-$2k. But then again..you could have used that money and bought yourself a much nicer car with a good paint job.

A paint job is 99% labor and 1% parts. Everything on the car that's not being painted (trim, headlights, plastic body cladding, etc) needs to be removed or masked. The entire car needs to be sanded, dents need to be taken out, scratches need to be filled, primer may be needed, and if so, the primer needs to be sanded. Then the car is sprayed, and if you're going for a really nice paintjob, it's sanded and polished after the new paint is dry. Then the car needs to be reassembled. There's a LOT of manual labor involved it in, and the way places are able to offer to paint a car for $300 or $500 or even $1000 is by skipping steps in the painting process, and that's why they don't come out looking very good.
