How much in the Da Vinci code was bull and how much had a basis in reality?

I read it; it's all bull but I liked it. I don't read books for their realism, I read them for entertainment. This book entertained me, so I could care less what the claims are about it.

Well all the art and descriptions of the art are real. But the interpretations are just that. It's a decent book IMO. Sort of falls apart in the second half, and feels rushed.

Yup. It was 100% pure bonafida grade A premium cut bull sh**.

All of the conspiracy theory comprising the background of the plot was all made up by Dan Brown.

I mean, I knew it was fiction. I was wondering if any elements of it were based in fact.

Ah yes, here comes the haters. Guess you can't have too much success these days without some backlash. What I liked about the novel was that you could actually play along. Heck, I even solved one of the riddles before it was revealed in the book. All the descriptions and facts in the novel are accurate, which lends it some intrigue. The interpretations in the novel need substantiation, but then again, so do the critics of the interpretations. I find it funny how the Christians get so defensive about a FICTION novel. I mean, seriously. Talk about defending things that don't need to be defended.

I didn't see any mention of Christianity in this thread until you brought it up. A bit defensive aren't you?

And seriously, it's a crappy novel by an over-rated author trying to pass off BS as fact ala Crichton. It's not that I hate it so much as I regret the time I wasted reading it.

hehe, i liked the novel a lot, although the dialogue was a bit cheesy lol. the theory is actually based off of preexisting theories/discussions going on nowadays, after the book of Mary, and the dead sea scrolls were discovered.

and I agree w/ Loke's comment completely.

There was a history channel discussion on the book and those were facts. The theory itself is debatable but France does exist :p

I was under the assumption it was based on theory, which in turn is based on fact.

But, it's still FICTION, and it's still a THEORY. I finished it entertained, and felt like I learned a little bit about some of the artwork. Stuff I'd have never noticed or thought about.

There is a blurb he even put in there, something to the extent of saying his goal was to provoke thought and discussion (and make $$). He's in no way trying to prove/show the world that Jesus was (insert THEORY here).

That being said, I have also read:

Angels & Demons, Deception Point, and Digital Fortress. I thought they were all good, ENTERTAINING, STORIES.

All the people saying the book is BS was talking about its theories regarding aspects of Christianity.
