Note that peak horsepower can be quite a bit higher than that. Even a human can develop > 1hp peak output.

If you have a good horse he will give 110% yeilding 1.1 horsepower

I won't get into blown horsepower, I might get banned:)

Actually, I disagree with everyone above... As a horsepower is now defined as a specific amount of power (745ish watts), most horses can generate far more power than that, at least for a short amount of time. In my physics class, we measure each students power output for running up a set of stairs. I typically generate about 1.25HP myself.
