How much HD space, and why do you need it?

I'm just curious... how much HD space do you have, and why do you need it?

Some of my friends boast that they have over 1.5 TB of storage space, and I always ask myself "what do you find to fill that?". I mean... I've archived every single audio CD I own (approx 120-140) to mp3 and flac, and just barely fill a 120GB drive.

So, for PERSONAL USE computers, why all the space?

(I understand that this space is necessary for people who do video editing or high-res tiff files, or music tracks, etc., etc.... but I'm just concerned with every-day computers).

Or is it just that I keep my computer(s) relatively clean, and so my OS/Application files don't take up 80 gigs :D

Most people I know download illegal movies/programs/files and store them for later viewing and never delete them. I've been running on a 40GB drive since 2000 and only ran out of room once. Its also a status thing too. I knew a guy who had a TB of storage and only used about 10% of that, on a good day. He did it because it made him feel better. Computers tend to have the e-penis thing about them.

I have 2x160gb, with about 140gb from dvd rips, 20gb from mp3, and 50 or so tv episodes. I just bought a 300gb since I'm running out of space :)

I like the "e-penis" term... it will get frequent use!

I also forgot - I am an avid MST3K fan, and have over 200 episodes at around 600-700 MB each...

But... they're on CDs!!!! Not like I really need to put them onto the HD... they don't get much frequent use, as I have enough of them that I just pick n' choose.

60gb - os & proggie drive on main rig (also gifs, images, pics, etc) [81.2% filled]
80gb - thrash drive on main rig - hdd that downloads are temporarily stored; this constant writing kills drives [38.6% filled]

80gb - os & proggie drive on file server [81.1% filled]
60gb - video drive on file server - files are burned off as space is needed [79.3% filled]
250gb - Rock (A-R) music drive on file server [77.5% filled]
120gb - Other music drive on file server [88.8% filled]
160gb - Pop & Rock (S-Z) music drive on file server [76.4% filled]

Instant access to my music collection is of prime importance to me. It's like a giant jukebox. I have it all backed up on dvd except for the new stuff that is on the thrash drive.

I only have 80GB and that is plenty for me. I only have 22.7 GB filled. I have around 5 GB of music (I don't really buy CDs, just download songs). Don't so much in the way of pr0n or movies, so that definately saves some space.

200GB on desktop.
40GB on laptop.
Laptop HDD is pretty empty, just OSX (iBook), iLife & iWork '05 suites, some music, and other basic apps. Desktop has 55GBs of DVDs converted to DivX and fansubbed anime on it, and ~15GB of Windows and other apps.

i just put together a new system with 320 gig of SATA-RAID0 space and i have no idea what to do with it all. :) my previous drive was only 80 gig and i tended to run out of space with games, music and pr0n, so hopefully, that won't ever be an issue again. but yeah, i think it's a big case of 'epenis' . . .

AH!!!
Don't do EVERYTHING RAID0. If one of your drives every fails, you lose all your data.
(RAID-0 recovery is expensive, if not impossible).

I usually tell people "the first think you should know about RAID-0 is to turn it off."

Afterwards, once you understand that you get a slight performance gain at the cost of increased vulnerability.... well, then it's your own choice!! I just hate it when people come in with trashed HDs and say 'can you get the data off of this... I took out the second drive, and now the computer won't boot off this one'.

:D

A few weeks back I upgraded from two 80GB drives that I was constantly filling up, to a new 250GB Serial ATA drive, and I kept one of the 80's, mainly for HDTV recording. :)

The 250GB (really 232GB) has about 155GB free right now...I've got several games installed, Office...the usual stuff. Decent amount of music, and all the pictures/videos I've taken with my camera amount to about 17GB. 80GB drive has about 23GB free right now, used mainly for HDTV and my page file. ;)
