It just occured to me today that I have a terrible sickness. I'll call it "Hardwareupgradeidus." I have spent close to $5,000 on hardware this past year just so I can have the latest and greatest and I still see systems that make mine look obsolete. That $5,000 is on 2 systems so cut me a little slack please. However, I am just wondering if there are any others out there that suffer from the same sickness as me. How can I stop the madness? I want to blame someone....Lets see:

1. The vendors for continually making NEWER and BETTER stuff every other day.
2. The 3D Gaming makers for making games that need more POWER!!
3. My wife for not hiding my check book.
4. These forums where I see that others have better stuff than me..
5. The media for making such pretty pictures of all the neat stuff out there.
6. VIA, VIA, VIA....for the fact that they still havent got it right and have to make a new motherboard everytime they realize something wasnt right with the first one.
7. 3dfx for dumping me and others like me who invested in a V5 5500.
8. NVIDIA for making 34,987 differnt types of Geforce cards.
9. BILL GATES...Just because!
10. ME? Hell no, without me and others like me, there would be no "Hardwareupgradeidus" to find a cure for and many theropist would be out of work.

Who is to blame? What do you think? Is there a 12 step program for my condition? Will the madness ever stop? Maybe I should start a site like this one so I can get FREE hardware everytime is comes out and always have the best stuff. Naaa, I'm not that smart. Oh well, if you are feeling my pain..please leave comments.

5000/2 is 2500. For that kind of money, you should probably get a much better system than what you have now. Visit the hot deals forum more often.

I believe I suffer from the same sickness, my friend :) I built an AMD Athlong 1Ghz, Asus A7V, 512MB Crucial PC133 CL2 SDRAM.....loaded ;) Well, I just sold it now to build a completely new Pentium 3 1Ghz machine with a "better" case, HDD, Controller card, etc. I didn't sink into investing into two machines, but only one. I guess I'm only half as bad as you :) LOL

No its not..

Booze is a wonderful thing. It's computer that's going to rot your brain!

Seriously though, I admit that I have gotten the urge to spend more since I started visiting this place, but I see the way people jump on a hot deal bandwagon and it scares me. Its almost like they feel left out for not being able to post: " Crucial at 95$? I wanted to get one stick, but I ended up getting three! now I have 5 gigs of Ram!"

I think some people make this place out to be more of a peer pressure group than it should be.

Yes Beater, your right, it is a hobby. I kind of look at it like my Computer is a hotrod and I continually soup it up. I guess the bright side is that a Video card is a lot cheaper than an aluminum intake manifold and headers. A stick of RAM is a lot cheaper than a new Carburator. Damn, now I just justified my madness even more....HELP!

All my money goes into my car or my computer. My computer has been getting the funds as of late, and my car is getting kind of sad; only running on rear drum brakes! I dream of the day that my computer and car will become one :)
hehe, I can imagine walking into a comp/auto store and asking for a new harddrive for my 68 ford. Or maybe I will order a new carb for my athlon system :p why not a pair of headers while I'm at it...

My friend wanted to buy a cheapo Mobo and Celery to build a PC from some left over parts for his sister. His budget was about $50

I have gotten him up to $300 and he is spending more time in the "For Sale / Trade" forum than me !

It's contagious...

Yeah I have gotten other addicted to the forums, and lo and behold they spend way more than they used to.

Me, well I just built a box and will use it until I am forced to upgrade. Spending this much money with little performance increase is stupid, imo. Besides, I get to spend this money on other addictions :D

Just do like I do & put away $15. a week . At the end of the year , you'll have close to $800. for "decent" upgrades .

I feel your pain. Beginning in about August of 2000 I first set out to build my first computer from scratch. Spent a little more than $1000 on it at the time. Was happy and content until about October when my sister wanted a new computer so I went ahead and built one for her. Spent another $800-$1000 on hers. Come December/January I wanted to upgrade my computer and somehow ended up spending $1250 more and now have 2 computers, a single P3-667 MHz fully loaded and a Dual P3-866 MHz fully loaded. I just got my credit card bill for the month of January and I've already imposed STRICT limits on myself to the point I'm now taking my lunch to work because I can't afford to go out to eat at lunchtime any more! I think it's become another addiction buying hardware and building computers! Too bad my last name isn't Dell!

I can hear you.... After 12 years spent with this hobby I can tell you that nowdays you need about $450/year to be relatively satisfied with your hardware. If you can keep yourself around that amount you're OK. I know people though, who are spending a lot more without beeing able to afford it painlessly with their bugdets. So the analogy with the alcohol is good. The computers doesn't harm your health, they take away from your time... But do you know anybody without a bad habit at all?

I've bought 512MB of RAM in the past few weeks that I really didn't need... I couldn't resist the low low prices... And probably in the not too distant future I'm going to be upgrading nearly everything in my system... And I've barely had this thing a few months!

I have an idea, lets start a "Hardware Trade" club. I mean, we all do this because we want to see what other components perform like. Well, once you feel you need to try another type of component, such as (A GEFORCE vs A Voodoo) instead of going out and buying a new card, we just trade with someone and try it for a while and then trade again. Within a few months, everyone will have tried a bunch of new stuff. Takes a lot of trust, but hey, we are all part of the same family of sick hardware junkies, we are brothers in techno addiction land, we MUST help each other!
