As I've gotten older, I don't waste as much money buying junk online as I used to. (used to buy stuff whether I needed it or not)

Now, the few things I get from Amazon are the S&S deal on 8 O'Clock 33oz bags and occasional fabric softener. Otherwise, I buy CDs on there and other stuff that I don't feel like paying tax on or searching locally for a lower price.

but amazon has A LOT of stuff that isn't "online junk" like you talk about. i went to home depot on sunday to get some stuff to clean up my yard, then decided to look at amazon while i was in the store. knowing that i wasn't going to do the work until this weekend, and that the price on every item were 3-5 dollars cheaper, plus i wouldn't pay sales tax, it made total sense to order it on amazon.

same with the fish finder. dicks has it for the same price amazon has it for, but i won't be going out until saturday in my boat and i don't have to pay sales tax, nor drive to the store.

Pretty much. AMZ even has decent prices on deodorant, if I wanted to buy 6 at a time :D

I used to blindly order things from Amazon as I was very confident it would be cheaper. Now that they've grown bigger I've found that Amazon is often more expensive. For example, this week I was at the supermarket buying several cans of Spam. I checked my phone and found Albertsons was selling a can for $3 and Amazon sells it for more than $4.

Maybe a grand... our selection has gotten better in Canada, but it still sucks compared to US of A.

I looked at joining prime but realized I don't buy enough to justify the annual fee.

I considered that. "I paid for prime, I better get buying!" didn't strike me as sound fiscal policy.

the cost of prime is $80/yr. i've already saved $91 from not paying sales tax from purchasing in store, and that is if it was the same price in store. it's already paid for itself.

and that doesn't include the xmas shopping i did last year.

last december i got amazon prime so i could do christmas shopping online and get the free 2 day shipping. since then i find myself ordering A LOT more stuff from amazon than i previously did.

And people wonder how it is Amazon gets by charging what they do for Prime.:hmm:

But it hasn't paid for itself, you still need to claim the taxes you temporarily avoided by buying on the internet. ;)

Exactly. Sure, I could buy something as simple as garden fertilizer or light bulbs at a store, but I can also get it on Amazon for a lower price, next day shipping if I really want it (2 day w/ prime anyways), and pay no tax.

The only time I go to a physical store is to buy food.

It's worth it if you can get enough others in on it. Get three or four other people/families to split the cost and it only ends up being $16 or $20 apiece for a year. Worth it for that.

For $80 a year, I could take it or leave it.

Couple things to consider - when you add members, they will need to give you their birthday in order to join as a form of verification. Also, only the primary account holder will get access to the instant video feature. Everyone else only gets the free shipping.

Prime didn't save you that money. You would have had the same opportunity to cheat on your taxes w/o signing up for prime. Prime saved you shipping costs. My shipping costs didn't hit $79/year so prime doesn't work for me.

i ordered an inflatable boat off of amazon the monday i was leaving vegas, with free 2-day shipping. i got home from work on tuesday and a big ass box that was like 4'x3'x1' that was 85lbs was sitting on my steps.

shipping alone on that item would have cost an arm and a leg.

you start buying stuff that you would otherwise go out and buy, thus saving you time and money on gas.
