How much harddrive space does a one hour recorded TV show take up? I was wondering with the various compression methods? How many hours of recorded TV can be put on a cdr?

really depends on the video/audio quality you like. For 307kpbs wmv format, which is quite watchable when it comes to talk show or news or soup opera type, it takes about less than 150 Mb for 1 hr, 320x240 size. (horrible for sporting events, though)

I don't think you can directly capture TV show in divx format, but after processing, yes, it's quite common to make 700mb 2 hr movie CD.

Mpeg 2 (720x480, 29.97fps) is about 13GIG per hour

Mpeg 1 (352x240, 29.97 - VCD White Book format) is about 560-575MB per hour.

Divx 5.1 (352x240 ...) - about ~300 MB (+/- 50MB, depending on motion).

The ATI 8500DV capture will allow you to use a DiVx CODEC to capture (I use MainConcept). Just go to the settings sreen, DVCR, "Custom" settings...

Most DVDs are limited to something like 8Mbps, and I think they are usually Varialble Bit Rate, which generally saves some space (but takes a little longer to encode... not that a commercial release would care about that, they have the REALLY expensive stuff....)

My Matrox 2500 capturing MPEG2, or the ATI 8500DV capturing AVI with HuffYUV or Main Concept is about 13G an hour. I usually then render it down with DiVx (2-pass)/Xmpeg or TmpgENC (MEPG1 - VCD or VCD setting with VBR for the video server (not for disk)) and get excellent results.
