How much general chemistry should I know for organic chemistry?

I took general chemistry my freshman year back in '98 and got a B in both semesters. However, I remember very little of it now. I'm going back to school for pre-pharmacy and was wondering whether I should re-take general chemistry or go straight to organic. Also the same for general physics - should I retake calculus before I take it? Thanks

I'd retake gen chem. It'll get you thinking along the right lines. Same with calc and physics. My sister just took all 4 because she's going for patent law.

organic have a lot of math, hard stuff even for my asian standard..... while general is more fun with lots of concept and a little math. I got an A back then in general chem. and D in organic I & II. ( I blame the D on my then GF in the same class, now my hot and shopping crazed white wife).

I'm thinking about patent law as well. I have a J.D., and would need only 32 credits in science (8 each in chemistry, biology, o-chem and physics) to sit for the patent bar. Although, at this point pharmacy seems like a much more stable career than any area of law, even IP.

I'm probably going to sign up for gen. chem and gen. biology tomorrow. :thumbsup:

None, ochem pretty much doesn't build on anything in General chem. Just know how to name some stuff and the general chemicals.

you don't need it. i got a D in general chem because i thought it was boring and never went to class. i took orgo chem (2 semesters) and got an A- and A, w/ an A+ in the lab.

Ochem = fun.. Chem3A. die.

Hell no, ochem != fun. I took Chem 3A last semester. I got a B- in Chem 3A and an A in Chem 3AL.

Heh. I was just kidding. I'm glad I don't have to take that. My roommate conveniently failed after sleeping in for 2 labs. I just heard the curve was really low each time and my friends got Bs as well.

I did the same thing you did. i originally took gen chem 1 in '97 or 98. Came back for my pre-med prereqs in Jan 2004. I retook gen chem just to review it. I think it helped with ochem. Having the foundation in gen chem will help you do better in ochem.

Orgo isn't very gen chem intensive. If you know stoichiometry and understand how the periodic table works and finally know Lewis structures I think you'll be ok... I think. You may need to review some acid base stuff, but I never really understood that until orgo anyway. I'd say review your stuff and have a gen chem book on hand for the beginning of orgo and you should be fine.

Orgo is a lot easier than most people say. Orgo is only hard for biology majors who complain because they have to take any chemistry at all. Anyone who puts half a thought into it should do well.
