How much gas have you used in the past year?

I've gone 16474.4 km and used 1068.3 L since mid June last year.

Thus I'm averaging 6.5 L/100 km, mostly driving short trips around the city, I must admit somewhat aggressively (but not dangerously).

1 US gallon = 3.7854 L. Thus 1068.3 = 282.2 US gallons

1 mile = 1.609 km. Thus 16474.4 km = 10238.9 miles

Thus I'm getting 36.3 mpg. This is nowhere near the claimed 48 mpg in the specs. I was hoping for about 40 mpg average, but oh well. I did manage to hit 44.7 mpg on a nice day of highway driving though, reaching about 513 miles on a 11.5 gallon tank of gas, and that includes some air conditioning as well.

While my car ain't a Formula 1 machine, I must say so far I am happy with it.

my car gets about 35mpg roughly
i live about 20 miles from work one way
40miles x 50 weeks x 5 days =10,000 miles
10000/35= 285.7 gallons for work

add some weekend/trips, i would guess about 400 gallons?

35 mpg. That's pretty damn good (assuming it's real world numbers).

I guess I should have mentioned that it's only 12 km (7.5 miles) to work one way for me, and I'm going thru the city - stop lights and everything. The specs say this thing does better in the city, but for my type of driving it is definitely untrue. I think they mean with maybe 20-40 km of city driving, with long stretches of not having to stop. Does anyone know what the course they use is for their city test?

Also just what is everyone driving?

lets see about 12,000 miles per year on 93 Prelude Si, 5 speed manual. car gets about 29 miles per gallon so about 414 gallons a year. Damn that's a lot more than I thought. Looks like I'm going to have to coast in neutral more often.

20000 miles a year at about 28 mpg, uhm 714 gallons. I should let up on the gas a little. I know my car can get better mileage.

I just noticed that. That's very odd. Maybe because it's a hybrid? But I still don't really understand why.

I'd like to know the actual mechanics of the test also.
Not even sure they actually do a 'road test' anymore. It may all be done on a dyno.

It's because after you drive for a while, the battery is fully charged, and if you're going at city speeds, ie. under 90 km/hr (it seems to me), the car makes much less use of the gas engine. Quite often I'll be cruising at 65 kmh (40 mph) and the gas engine will be completely off, whereas if I'm at 120 km/hr (75 mph) it almost always stays on (unless I'm slowing down :p).

I guess my problem is the stopping and starting. If I accelerate quickly from a red light, the gas engine comes on immediately. The more aggressive I am the more gas I waste. Not surprising - the same with all cars. I betcha their "city" driving doesn't have that many complete stops.
