I forgot about mixing the concrete. Duh, how else would the posts stay in the ground?

The ground is pretty flat. It slopes upward at the back of my property, but I'd be building just in front of that to aid in water drainage, and I think it's an easement anyway. But the slope is the same height at the same spot all the way across, a very man-made slope.

Since the 8 ft sections won't fit the measurements perfectly, I will likely need to cut them to size in a few spots. Is this hard to do with premade sections?

I feel like the labor is where I would get reamed, so I'd really prefer to do it myself. If I had two guys helping me that had done this several times before, and I pick up things like this pretty quickly, do you think it could be done in 1 day?

edit: wiz82, no, nothing separates my yard from the folks behind me, so no worries there.

No

Yeah, it is generally at least a two weekend job. The first weekend is for digging the holes, putting the posts down, and pouring the concrete. It'll take a few days to dry. The second weekend is for putting up the fence boards.

i am in the process of putting up a 6' privacy fence. Mine is 175' and I bought all pressure treated lumber & pickets (read: didn't get the pre-made panels). The total cost for everything, including concrete, was $638.00 IIRC.

If you're not going near any trees with the fence, do yourself a favor and rent an auger for the weekend - you'll be able to dig the holes much quicker and easier.

Here is a rough estimate of what you may need based on my recent buying experience and the prices I paid. Keep in mind it may be more if you get cedar lumber or something else:

1) 16 4x4s - $6.99 each - 111.84
2) 15 2x4x8s - $2.22 each - $33.30
3) 232 6" pickets (1/2x6"x6' is what I used) - $.95 each - $220.40
4) 16 bags concrete - $2.50 each - $40.00
5) Misc (screws, nails, etc) - $25

Total: $430.54

i'll echo weadjust's prices. Around $8/ft for treated pine.

FYI, i've installed a good bit of fencing and I no longer use concrete for the post. I used crushed limestone. I've had problems with post rotting at the junction between the concrete and post. The crushed limestone allows the water to drain away. I've also seen Norm Abrams use the same technique. If it's good enough for him, it's good enough for me. I shoudl also mention you have the added benefit of not having to wait for the concrete to set. It does take a bit of work, as you have to get down and pack the limestone tight.

I called 6 fencing companies. I got estimates between $1475 and $1900.

I don't have 2 weekends anytime soon to get this done, unfortunately. It'd be great to do it myself, but if it will take that long, then I'll probably have to go with some pros. $1475 isn't so bad.

Decent prices. I'd go with one in the middle of the range.

I'm good 😉

Heh, yep, you called it. I hope to get it put up this Friday. That way our new mastiffs can take their massive dumps outside with me having to drag along behind them on the leash 😀
